Sports 2011: Looking Back on Victories and Defeats

A look back at Hillsborough's best moments in the past year.

There have been highs, lows and in-betweens in Hillsborough in 2011.

Let's take a look back at some of the best that the town had to offer in sports in the past 365 days.

In January, the for its consecutive sectional championships. The Raiders followed those honors with both a North 2Group 4 championship and again during the 2011 season.

Februrary was the month of almosts for the Raiders. Hillsborough's boys basketball team was narrowly ousted in the Somerset County Tournament semifinals by top-seed and eventual champion Gill St. Bernard's.

Hillsborough's wrestlers , and were edged by Hunterdon Central in the North 2, Group 4 semis, 34-25. However,  Hillsborough did grab the Somerset County championship, and had , including current-University of Maryland wrestler TJ Guidice. Guidice then .

In the spring time, Hillsborough's baseball and softball teams reached the Somerset County Finals. The reaching the Central Jersey Group 4 semis before falling to Rancoas Valley, 5-2 on May 31.

However, the boys failed to get the sweep, as . The Raiders, like their female counterparts, reached the CJ 4 semis, upsetting top-seeded Steinert in the process, but fell in the semifinals, 8-2 to Monroe.

In lacrosse both boys and girls had terrific seasons capped by gut-wrenching losses. the Raiders' boys reached the The girls won the Somerset County Tournament championship, besting Montgomery 17-13 on May 14. The girls' season ended on May 26 after falling to Ridgewood 15-14.

Hillsborough boys soccer upset sixth-seeded Bayonne 1-0 in the first round of the Central Jersey, Group 4 tournament, but fell in the second round to Elizabeth 1-0. Girls soccer reached the states as well, but fell 4-0 to No. 2 Westfield.
