Hillsborough High's Tong and Zhang on Merit Scholarship Shortlist

Pair are among 16,000 students named as semifinalists in National Merit Award Scholarship program.

Hillsborough High School students Jane Tong and Christopher Zhang are among the 16,000 National Merit Scholarships semifinalists.

The annual scholarship program awards about 8,000 scholarships annually to the top high school students in the country, based on the student's essay entry, SAT scores, and recommendations.

To become a finalist, the semifinalists and their high school must submit a detailed scholarship application, in which they provide information about the student’s academic record, participation in school and community activities, demonstrated leadership abilities, employment, and honors and awards received.

Jane has been active on the school's RoboRaider's team, regularly attending board of education meetings to update the board members on the team's progress through the 2012-2013 competitions.

Christopher is a member of the school's Math Team, which placed second in the state at the 37th annual statewide math competition, sponsored by the Association of Mathematics Teachers of New Jersey.

Finalists for the prestigious, $2,500 scholarships will be announced in the spring.
