Completed Roof Projects Solve Leaking Problems

Roof projects at Triangle Elementary School and Hillsborough High School have been completed.

Completed roofing projects at Triangle Elementary School and Hillsborough High School fixed leaking problems and pooling water, according to the district’s architect and buildings supervisor.

The $1,123,000 project replaced the entire roof at Triangle School and a portion of the Hillsborough High School roof that covered the school’s Commons, music rooms, and one of the school gyms. Though initially proposed at replacing just the roof over the school Commons and the music room, the board approved $375,000 of additional work that encompassed the gym. The additional work allowed the district to obtain a 20-year warranty on the project and was funded using surplus from the district’s 2010 budget and capital projects funds from the 2011 budget.

“The reason for the additional scope was that we originally has a partial patching for a portion of the high school roof, “ Sin-U Nam, of Nam Kim Park Architects, said. “But if we added the additional scope, we got a 20-year warranty.”

The project bids coming in under budget also permitted the district to complete the expansion, Business Administrator Aiman Mahmoud noted at a prior meeting.

According to Nam, the timing of the project allowed the district to obtain the lower bids.

“The reason the bids came in as low as they did was the timing of the project,” he said. “If we bid out the roofing projects at this time of year, it would have been double, at least.”

The replacement also removed several non-functioning skylights at the high school—the school’s drop ceilings covered the openings—and removed the safety issue from having the skylights, according to Buildings Supervisor Dave Fresco.
