Hillsborough's Township Administrator to Leave Post

Search underway for Michael Merdinger's replacement.

Township Administrator Michael Merdinger is leaving his post, Mayor Carl Suraci announced at Tuesday’s Township Committee meeting.

Suraci said Merdinger, who also serves as acting township clerk, will remain on the job until August.

“We wish him well in his future endeavors,” the mayor said. “We thank you for your time with us.”

Suraci said the township has already begun searching for Merdinger’s replacement.

Merdinger, a Flagtown resident, has been active in the township for more than 30 years.

He has been member of the Flagtown Volunteer Fire Co. since 1976 and served on the Hillsborough Township Committee in 1979 and again from 1981 to 1984, serving as mayor in 1984.

In addition, Merdinger served on the township’s Planning Board for two decades.

Merdinger previously worked since 1987 for Tetra Tech EC, an international environmental engineering and consulting firm. His most recent post, at Tetra Tech EC, was manager of the Kuwait Waste Management Project, where he oversaw a 148-employee work force and a $26 million budget.

An accomplished professional engineer who holds a degree from the New Jersey Institute of Technology, Merdinger has had 21 industry presentations and reports published, and received the South Africa Standard Oil Project of the Year Award in 2006 for the design, construction and commissioning of a waste recycling facility in South Africa.

He has also served on the Hillsborough Municipal Utilities Authority since 1987.

Merdinger’s also playing a lead role in the uncovering and gaining Superfund  remediation of a Hillsborough site, the Krysowaty Farm on Three Bridges Road.  The $11 million federally funded cleanup was the first Superfund site in the nation to be completely remediated in 1981.

Merdinger has served in his current role since January 2011. He succeeded Kevin Davis, who resigned to become deputy executive director of the Senate Republican staff and a senior adviser on local government issues for the state Senate Republican leader, Thomas Kean Jr. (R-Union).

Merdinger earned $123,996 in 2011.

A follow-up on this article would be interesting. Where are they advertising the position? What are the requirements for this job? What type of responses are they getting? Are there applicants who already have their certifications/degrees and, possibly, experience? Who is doing the final interviews? Can we find someone not registered with either party?

SG - Look on the League of Municipalities website. They have want ads there. I would be shocked if you find one. Here's a thought - if he was in Africa & Kuwait doing all that stuff how did he attend MUA meetings? Please don't tell me he flew back in once a month.

I would like to thank Mr. Merdinger for two occasions that I needed his assistance. One of which was removing a dead tree from green acre property. I had been calling Public Works dept for months to no avail. I called Mr. Merdinger and explained the situation and he took care of the rest. I called his office a second time when PSEG was doing a project throughout the neighborhood and since I lived on a cul de sac they felt it all right to park all the equipment in front of my house. The equipment was moved that afternoon. Thank you Mr. Merdinger and best wishes to you.

S.G. -- Is that the same process the TC put Judy Haas through? Oh and since when in America, can one be denied a job, because of their political affiliation? Are You Actually Serious? Do you actually think there are no democrats or republicans working in the Federal Government?

BoomBoom If you are connected to Hillsborough’s Sewer System, you can thank Mr. Merdinger expertise for saving you and the other rate payers hundreds of thousands of dollars over his tenure there.

I think we're going to plump for http://www.outletcoachstoday.com the bigger one. It won't be the http://www.coachoutletod.com easiest to tow behind our push-bikes, http://www.coachs-outletcar.com particularly over Berlin's cobbles, but it will make http://www.coachoutletdp.com for swifter trips to interviews, http://www.coachoutletwo.com and it will save money for the licence-payer. http://www.coachfactoryoutletsp.com Berlin makes getting around http://www.coachfactoryoutletli.net on two wheels a pleasure.I have cycled in London http://www.coachfactoryoutletce.org but gave it up after too-many rants at a http://www.coachoutletonlinelc.net white van. But in Berlin, it is a joy. Firstly, the city is http://www.coachoutletonlinesc.com pretty flat, and secondly, there are endless cycle http://www.coachoutletonlinelsa.com tracks. Thirdly, everybody has a bike - so car-drivers are http://www.louisvuittonoutletct.com probably also cyclists in their other lives and so keep http://www.louisvuittonoutletti.org their eyes wide open. The test of whether cycling has really taken off in a city http://www.coachoutletrf.com is who does it. In New York, it is urban warriors, young men usually, who zip http://www.coachfactoryonlinebp.com aggressively between lanes. In London, it's a bit of that, but also, I suspect, http://www.coachoutletuser.net eco-zealots who are asserting their credentials - though the Boris bike scheme may be taking it more mainstream. In Berlin, it is the people.

A zoning administrator must be familiar with the ideas behind the zoning code--the planning, environmental and transportation studies that generally precede adoption of a zoning code--the code language, and the legal processes incorporated in the code. In many states, townships are organized and operate under the authority of state statutes, similar to counties. In others, townships operate as municipal corporations chartered entities with a degree of home rule.
