BOBO: Food Collection Program a Success with County Employees

Buy One, Bring One Fridays adds to food bank supplies.

Somerset County employees are doing their part to help the local food bank.

The Board of Chosen Freeholders Tuesday night acknowledged county staff  for their participation in Buy One, Bring One (BOBO) Fridays.

The program was initiated about a year ago by Freeholder Patricia Walsh, who noted that the Food Bank Network of Somerset County was often short of supplies, particularly at the end of each month. She asked county employees to buy one canned food item and bring another one in to donate once a month.

“It’s mushroomed,” Walsh said. “Now it’s in all our county facilities.”

In its first year, the BOBO program collected 5,800 pounds of food.

The Food Bank Network of Somerset County, Walsh pointed out, has more than 3,000 clients (the equivalent of more than 850 families) who visit the facility on a regular basis.

“That one can once a month makes a tremendous difference to a lot of people,” Walsh stressed.

The public is invited to participate in BOBO Fridays by bringing donations of canned food items to collection points at the following county facilities: the Somerset County Administration Building, 20 Grove St., Somerville; Somerset County Library,  North Bridge Street and Vogt Drive, Bridgewater; Somerset County Park Commission Headquarters, 355 Milltown Road, Bridgewater; Environmental Education Center, 190 Lord Stirling Road, Basking Ridge; and Lord Stirling Stable, 256 South Maple Ave., Basking Ridge.
