Small Brush Fire Quickly Extinguished

Fire official urges caution after blaze near Hillsborough Middle School Sunday.

Firefighters quickly extinguished a small brush fire that broke out near Hillsborough Middle School Sunday, Chief Bruce Vatter of the Hillsborough Volunteer Fire Department said.

Firefighters responded to the scene around 11:30 a.m. and snuffed out a blaze that was consuming a 10-by-10-foot area, Vatter said.

According to the New Jersey Forest Fire Service, the risk of wildfire was listed as “high” for Hillsborough and much of the rest of the state Sunday.

Given the conditions, Vatter said residents should be careful when disposing of smoldering material.

“People should be cautious when disposing of burning embers from barbecues or cigarettes,” Vatter said. “Anything like that will cause a fire.”
