Kevin Gibson helped teach swimming at Hillsborough YMCA's pool.

Kevin Gibson, 15, a sophomore at Hillsborough High School, was recently recognized by the New Jersey YMCA State Alliance as an outstanding volunteer.

For three months, Gibson volunteered about six to eight hours each week for the Hillsborough Family YMCA Aquatics Department

He assisted with the Y summer camp’s daily swim lessons, helping to teach skills that keep campers safe around the water, as well as helped design bulletin boards for announcements at the Y.

Hillsborough YMCA Aquatics Director Lisa Slover noted Kevin, a nine-year member of the Y swimming teams, has "the tools to be a great instructor."

“He takes the time to help each student reach their individual goals and work on stroke technique,” she said. “Kevin has given many of our campers the confidence they need to overcome their pool-related fears and swim independently.”
