Local Supermarket Donates $1,135 to Food Pantry

Stop and Shop's annual drive meant a donation for Hillsborough's Food Pantry

A little money added up to a big donation for the Hillsborough Food Pantry, as $1, $3 and $5 donations by Stop and Shop Shoppers netted $1,135 for the pantry.

According to a release from the supermarket chain, the store’s annual Food for Friends program ran from Oct. 29 to Dec. 10 in all Stop and Shop locations—a total of 392 stores that raised $2 million, the company stated.

“We are overwhelmed by the generosity and support from our customers and associates for Food for Friends,” Arlene Putterman, a spokesperson for Stop & Shop said via release. “We exceeded the amount raised in 2009 by 40 percent. Even a tough economy could not dampen the spirit of giving that exists with the associates and customers in our communities.”

During the program, customers were asked to donated $1, $3, or $5 paper turkeys, with the money collected going toward local and regional food banks, according to the release.
