Hillsborough: Temple Beth-El Gearing Up For 4H Fair

by Pam Lavroff

Fern Schiffman, leader of the 4H Fair Committee, is always thinking about new ideas for Temple Beth-El’s booth at the Somerset County 4H Fair.  Two years ago the Temple Beth-El 4H Fair committee decided to add freshly squeezed lemonade to the menu that includes falafel, sweet potato fries, and mozzarella sticks.

Fern is a teacher at John P. Steven HS in Edison for ten months of the year, but in July and August she focuses her attention on the 4H Fair food booth staffed by volunteers from Temple Beth-El.  She works with these volunteers to prepare staffing schedules, purchase the necessary ingredients, and dust off the hand made lemonade cart for the big event.

Since she had the idea to sell lemonade, the refreshing drink has become so popular that over 850 lemons are used at the three day fair.  For those customers who prefer something different, Temple Beth-El will also be offering sweet tea this year.

Temple Beth-El is a Reform Jewish congregation located at 67 Route 206 in Hillsborough.  The temple offers a variety of cultural, educational, social, and spiritual opportunities.  For more information visit www.ourbethel.org or call 908-722-0674.
