Democratic Alliance Meetings to Include Speakers, Books and Inauguration

Group plans weekly meetings through January.

The Hillsborough Democratic Alliance is off to a strong start in 2013, and is moving forward with several interesting events in January.

Focusing on governmental transparency and accountability, the Alliance provides all participants with an opportunity to discuss the issues facing Hillsborough, Somerset County, New Jersey, and the nation as a whole.

Members can become civically engaged in any area of concern, including charitable causes, economics, environment, and education, among others. The Alliance encourages those who supported President Obama’s re-election and others to participate in any or all of these upcoming events:

MONTHLY MEETING:  Thursday at 7 p.m. is the next monthly meeting at Avalon Assisted Living, 393 Amwell Road. The first meeting of the year is a good time to come and meet Democrats and other progressives in Hillsborough and see what’s in store for 2013. Refreshments are provided at 6:45 p.m. Heather Taylor from Citizens Campaign will be guest speaker.  Heather is The Citizens Campaign Communications Director, serving as its spokesperson and lobbyist. Heather coordinates and advocates for the adoption of numerous local, county, and state laws crafted by the campaign’s Law and Policy Task Force. The Citizens Campaign, founded in 1998, has educated thousands of New Jerseyans in how to navigate the power structure of government and to exercise leadership beginning with their own hometowns. Current and prospective HDA members are welcome to attend the meeting.

POLITICS BOOK CLUB MEETING: Jan. 17, from 7 to 9 p.m. at Sal's Pizzeria, Triangle and Auten Roads. This month's book is “It’s Even Worse Than It Looks: How the American Constitutional System Collided With the New Politics of Extremism” by Thomas E. Mann and Norman J. Ornstein.  No matter what happens with the fiscal cliff, the information presented in this book is timely and critical.  You can join us for dinner, good discussion, and camaraderie even if you haven't completed the book.  Contact Jim Bergstrom, vice president at james.bergstrom@comcast.net to RSVP immediately.

INAUGURATION PARTY: Jan. 21st – 6:30 p.m. at a Wertsville Road home in Hillsborough.  View a recast of President Obama’s inauguration while enjoying appetizers, pizza and desserts, followed by a discussion of the speech and the national agenda for Obama’s second term.  Bring $5/person for pizza and bring a dessert or something to drink. Contact Meryl at mbisberg@comcast.net or Jim at james.bergstrom@comcast.net to RSVP and for location information and directions.

Please check out "Hillsborough Democratic Alliance" on facebook at any time for more information.
