Marine Vet Robert Powell, 79, Was Longtime Bridgewater Teacher

Was a champion boxer in Marines in the late 1950s.

Robert J. Powell, 79, of Hillsborough, died Nov. 10, with his family by his side, at Foothill Acres Rehabilitation Center after a battle with complications from a fall.

He was born in Wilkes-Barre, Pa., the son of the late William and Sally Powell.

Bob served in the United States Marines and was a life member of the Marine Corps League. He was the 1957 All Marine and All Service Boxing Champion.

Bob was inducted into both the Pennsylvania Boxing Hall of Fame and the U.S. Martial Arts Hall of Fame.

He was a graduate of East Stroudsburg University where he met Rosemarie, his wife of 53 years and a graduate as well.

Bob was an honored educator in the Bridgewater-Raritan School District and was a respected wrestling coach of then Bridgewater High School East.

He was also an avid member of the NRA, Loyal Order of Elk and American Legion Post #12.

He is survived by his wife Rosemarie, son William J. Powell, brothers Bill, Donald,John, Ronald and Richard and sisters Sally, Patricia, Myrna, Gretchen and Jane. He is also survived by his two grandchildren Rachel and Nico.

The viewing will be from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. Nov. 15 at Ketusky Funeral Home, 1310 Brooks Blvd., Manville. Funeral services will be held at 8:15 a.m. Nov. 16, followed by a 9 a.m. Mass at Christ The King Roman Catholic Church in Manville. Burial will be private.
