Interim assistant superintendent gives upbeat assessment of HIB, violence and vandalism numbers.
A total of 13 incidents of violence were reported in Hillsborough schools between September and December, less than a quarter of the numbers reported in the same period a year earlier, according to a midyear report on violence and vandalism presented by Interim Assistant Superintendent for Personnel Andrew Rinko at Monday's Board of Education meeting. "I think it's because of the culture that's been created here," Dr. Rinko said about the drop in the numbers. The annual report is required by state law, and aimed at making the public aware of incidents of violence in the schools. District attributes violence, vandalism increases to a natural uptick in incidents.
District officials attribute an increase in incidents of violence and vandalism in its annual incident report to the natural spikes in incidents that occur year to year. “Over the last couple of years, we have seen a more of a downward trend,” Assistant Superintendent for Personnel Scott Rocco, who gave the report, said. “We have been consistent in the past few years but now we are more focused on school safety.” According to the report, the district saw its total incidents double from 36 in 2009-10 to 72 in 2010-11.
