Veterans were honored by students and staff at Triangle and Woodfern elementary schools this week, commemorating Veterans Day. At Triangle Elementary School, students sang for veterans during an hour-long school-wide assembly. Afterward, veterans attended a reception in their honor. Many of them were friends and family of the students and staff, and the school extended its thanks and appreciation for their service and dedication. At Woodfern Elementary School, retired Hillsborough High School teacher Barbara-Jo Kruczek played on her bugle to start the school’s Veterans Day assembly. Students introduced veterans, all family members of the students, that they had brought to school that day. One highlight was when bothers Noah and Adam …

Past and present teachers and students celebrate Woodfern Elementary's 50th birthday.
There was plenty of fun to be had on a great fall day as Hillsborough Public Schools and the township community celebrated the 50th anniversary of Woodfern Elementary School. Former and current teachers, students and others associated with the school joined in a party celebrating the golden anniversary. First opened in 1962, Woodern like the rest of Hillsborough, has grown but still retains its rural setting. The event featured tours of the facility and a carnival. Also as part of the celebration, the current students created a time capsule which will be opened in 2025 when this year's kindergarten class graduates high school. Check out who we saw partying like it was 1962 at the event in the gallery above.

A look at the changes at the school and the nation as the school celebrates its golden anniversary.
In 1962, teachers at the newly opened Woodfern Elementary School stood before blackboards and passed out mimeographed worksheets. Today, as the school marks its 50th anniversary, students can speak with people around the world or download videos onto smart phones or tablet computers from a satellite based communications system inaugurated in 1962 when Telstar 1, the first electronic telecommunications device–developed in part at Bell Labs in Hillside–was successfully launched. On Saturday, the Hillsborough School District will celebrate the 50th anniversary of Woodfern Elementary with a party from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. The event will feature tours of the facility and a carnival. The district has reached out to alumni and former staff to join …

Thursday was a special day for all Hillsborough students, but especially at Woodfern Elementary.
Thursday marked the end of summer vacation for the 7,400 Hillsborough students in the district, from kindergartners through high school seniors, as they made their way back to school on the first day of classes. The start was a particularly special one for the 380 students at Woodfern Elementary School, as the Woodfern Road Runners celebrate the school's 50th anniversary. Third grader Jessica Erickson got a special treat when she entered through the school's front doors. As the 50th student to enter the building, Erickson was to be treated to a special lunch by Woodfern's first-year principal Steven Kerrigan, who transferred from Auten Road Intermediate School after serving as its vice principal. A gallery from the opening of school at …

Woodfern Elementary School students received a thrill on Thursday during their Flag Day celebration. A Black Hawk helicopter came to the school to pay everyone a visit. The images above show the copter approaching and landing. Diane Movshin also presented the school with an American flag that her husband, Maj. Rob Movshin, had flown over Kandahar Air Force Base in Afghanstan. The couple has two sons that attend the school. Each student also packed bags to be sent to service members overseas. The Woodfern HSA, along with Operation Jersey Cares and Rolling Thunder, sponsored Thursday's packing day. Donations have been collected for the past few months in anticipation of the day.

Woodfern Elementary School celebrated Arbor Day on Friday with several activities designed to intertwine learning and the environment. Judd Mandell, the owner of Landscape Better, led multiple outdoor sessions during which he interacted with students as they planted trees together in Woodfern’s new “Learning Grove.” At the conclusion of the day, the students of Woodfern attended a spirit rally focusing on how we are entrusted to take care of our planet. Students and staff, along with the Roadrunner, the school’s mascot, thanked Mandell for all of his hard work and encouragement throughout the day. Students also unveiled a plaque to be planted near the trees which read, “We speak for the trees along with one another if you please!” in the …

Bus suffers no damages, district officials report.
None of the 13 Woodfern Elementary School students were injured after an Acura rear-ended their school bus on Amwell Road Tuesday. The accident occured at about 3:30 p.m., when the bus was stopped near the intersection of Amwell Road and River Road, School Business Administrator Aiman Mahmoud said. The bus suffered no damages and was able to complete its regular route. "Believe it or not, there was not a nick on the bus," Mahmoud said. "I don't know how you miss a bus. The bus was stopped, so the flashing lights were on." The Acura suffered front-end damage, but no injuries were reported. Hillsborough Police and the district's transportation supervisor also reported to the crash scene. The district anticipated the students would arrive …

Thank you again to Mrs. Pedersen and Woodfern for giving my husband, Major Robert Movshin, the opportunity to participate in their Veterans Day celebration! My boys were so proud to see their Dad address the school and its guests from so far away. How wonderful that WES takes the time to honor our Veterans near and far, young and old!   more ›
