Presidents Day? Presidents' Day? President's Day? The apostrophe is moot, says History/REACH Supervisor Matt Mingle
- THE NEIGHBORHOOD FILES

Monday, February 20, 2012
Editor's Note: Today's colum is from Hillsborough's History/REACH supervisor, Matt Mingle. Happy President's Day, Hillsborough! Who will we be celebrating today? George Washington? Washington and Abraham Lincoln? All American presidents? I guess it all depends on where you put the apostrophe. Actually, the apostrophe issue is moot; there is no such holiday as Presidents (or President’s or Presidents’) Day. The holiday honors George Washington and bears only his name in state and federal law. Washington’s Birthday, first officially celebrated on Feb. 22, 1880, was added to the list of federal holidays by Congress a year earlier. Although originally applying only to federal workers in Washington D.C., observance expanded to include all …

Cleaning out your closet could help Hillsborough High School band students.
Winter’s the time to get a head start on spring cleaning, but items you’re tossing don’t have an end destination in a landfill. Instead, the Hillsborough Band Parents Association will let you drop off old or too-small clothes and other unwanted items from 10 a.m. to noon Saturday at Hillsborough High School. They’ll be able to make a profit from the items that will be used to support the band program. Old indoor toys, household linens, shoes, handbags, regular bags and other items will be accepted during the collection. All items must be in good condition, and it’s recommended that any shoes be packaged separately from the clothes. Clothing and other fabric items should be placed in a well-tied plastic bag. Here’s what you need to know …

The search for Valentine's Day stories continues—gushy, mushy, off-beat and everything in between.
They say there are at least 50 ways to leave your lover, but there are probably more than 100 ways to meet one. Of course, some are funny stories. Some are ridiculous. Some are completely mushy. Regardless, Hillsborough Patch wants to hear them all. Interested in sharing? Email Editor Eileen.Oldfield@patch.com or call her at 908-552-9983 to set up an interview. We’ll feature the love stories as part of our Valetine’s Day coverage. Here’s what you need to know today:

Do you call out after the Pigskin Bonanza (Super Bowl)?
The wings are now plates of bones. The beer bottles are now empty. And now, for NFL fans everywhere, starts the six long months of waiting for pre-season action to start. The Monday following the Super Bowl has long been considered a day in which employers could count on many workers calling out after watching one of the most celebrated sporting events in the world. This year, local business owners and managers should probably expect more call outs than usual, because of the NY (should be NJ) Giants involvement in the game. So, for those of you that managed to stay away from the workplace, there are a few things for you to do right here in Hillsborough. Here's what you need to know today:

Who are you rooting for today?
In a few hours, it's show time for the Giants-Pats rematch. With the Big Game occurring today, it’s almost fortunate—for the non-football lovers, I suppose—that a more genteel holiday happens in a little over a week. It's almost a counter to the beer, wings, food and sports bonaza that occurs today. Here’s where we’ll be this week: Monday: Wondering about the solar panels that were going on the YMCA? We have an update from there about when the installation is expected to begin. Tuesday: Valentines Day is a week away, so you’ll begin seeing themed articles today. Wednesday: The new law allowing school elections to move to November is a hot topic—we’ll have an article on what local officials think about it today.

Pig Skin Bonanza, The Big Game. No matter what you call it, it's one day until the Super Bowl!
It is just a little over 24 hours away. The Big Game. The Showdown in Colts-Town. The Pig Skin Bonanza in Indiana. OK, no one is calling the Super Bowl any of those names, but perhaps they will one day. NJ is the true home to the NY Giants, despite what their helmets read, and as such expect long lines at the grocery and liquor stores today, because as we all know, beer and chips and pretzels and beer and wings and beer and pizza and beer all go hand-in-hand with football. We at Patch remind you to drink responsibility and never drive while impaired. Prior to the Pandemonium at Lucas Oil Stadium (you try rhyming something with Lucas Oil Stadium), be sure to get your future Lombardi Trophy hopefuls and their cheerleading counterparts …

Hillsborough Patch is still looking for residents' amusing or unbelievable dating stories.
What’s love if you can’t laugh about it? Last week, Hillsborough Patch asked for residents’ funny, unfortunate, or just plain unbelievable dating stories. While we haven’t heard from any residents yet, our friend Geoff offered to share his first date story: I met Mike online when I was a senior in college and he was a townie living about a mile away. We met through Yahoo Personals, of all places, and we didn't do any of the usual online chitchat that always felt so pointless. Instead, we talked on the phone and set up a date at a coffee shop. Now, I've never been good with directions, and this was particularly true before I started driving. So, when we met, I was unable to get much of anywhere, and it was also before a phone could act as …

The big gamel is four days away. Are you ready?
With only a few days before the Super Bowl, you already have your menu set, the invites sent and might be preparing the annual pool. But what about the drinks? It’s among the most prominent times to partake in the stronger set of drinks, and, luckily, Hillsborough has several shops to grab your favorites in advance of the game. If you’re looking for wine, NEC liquors, Hillsborough’s newest shop, can help you find a wine, scotch or other liquor to suit the occasion. Meanwhile, Petrock’s Liquors stocks both packs of beers and bottles of craft brews. Bottle King is a third option that’s right across from the ShopRite and Stop and Shop lots.Regardless of what you drink, be sure to have a friend who won’t partake to drive you home—or call one …

Thank You, Matt...for your thoughtful and insightful article...It is time that we (America) stepped back from the path of convenience and the PC mentality and started to re-recognize the people and principles upon which this Country was Created, Nurtured, and Grew...In the last half-century or so, America has yielded more and more to the notions of PC, with all its obliteration of the principles …   more ›
