NJDOT Restores All Route 22 Lanes Near Commons Mall

The construction work was completed earlier than was scheduled.

Officials with the New Jersey Department of Transportation announced Thursday that all lanes on Route 22 near Mountain Avenue in Bridgewater and Somerville have officially reopened—a few weeks earlier than expected. The highway had been restricted to one lane at that intersection in mid-May to install a new drainage system and make curb and pavement repairs along Route 22 East in the area of Route 202/202 and Mountain Avenue. The right lane was reopened as of Wednesday morning. The area is now at full capacity again with two travel lanes and an acceleration lane. According to a release from the NJDOT, the lane was expected to be closed until mid-June, but the work was finished early by contractor Green Construction Inc. The work is part of…

Four pedestrians were killed on the highway in two years.

Route 22 has been named the most dangerous road in Somerset County by the Tri-State Transportation Campaign (TSTC), based on data that shows four pedestrians were killed on the highway between 2010 and 2011. The seemingly most dangerous stretch of Route 22, based on the number of deaths, runs through Bridgewater in the vicinity of North Bridge Street to Adamsville Road, areas the New Jersey Department of Transportation is currently putting a focus on for its Route 22 improvements that will include better interchanges in the area of Route 287. The report, generated by the non-profit organization which seeks transportation reform in New York and New Jersey, detailed and designated a single most dangerous road per county in every county in …

Median U-Turn Removal Part of Route 22 Upgrade

NJDOT held an information session Wednesday.

With a projected starting time of around March 2013, the New Jersey Department of Transportation presented its continued plans for short term improvements on Route 22 Wednesday, including the decision to close the u-turns in the median of the highway. According to a release from the state about the program, NJDOT has found several locations with high accident rates, namely Route 22 between North Bridge Street and Grove Street; the intersection of Grove Street and the North Grove Street overpass; and at the u-turns. According to Thomas Dancsecs, with Burchart Horn, Inc.—the design consultant hired by the state—the newest aspect of the plan is to create a deceleration lane from Route 22 West onto Route 287. "And there is some new sign …

The issue is the left hand exits and entrances RT 22 had with I287, and the partial interchange that forces people to need the U-turns. For example, heading North on i287 you need to take a left hand exit onto Rt 22, then grab a U-turn to get onto Rt 22 east. It is not rocket science but our Department of Transportation is a sleep at the wheel and responsible for countless deaths. How many more …   more ›
