Restriction to implement NJDOT improvements to last about 50 days.
Short term improvements on Route 22 will continue Friday, as the highway goes down to one lane in a section of Bridgewater for about 50 days. According to a release from the Bridgewater Township Police Department, Route 22 East will be reduced to one lane between the New Jersey State Police Barracks and the Mountain Avenue entrance. This is expected to last for about 50 days. Green Construction Inc. is closing the right travel lane to through traffic. For an approximately 0.3-mile stretch, the section of the road will go from two lanes to one until mid June, unless the work is finished earlier. A Bound Brook resident was killed in a two-car motor vehicle accident on Route 22 West Thursday morning that shut down one lane for about four hours, according to a release from the Bridgewater Township Police Department. Esperanza Guardado, 45, was a passenger in one of the vehicles, and was pronounced dead at the scene. According to police, Manville resident Silvia Marin was driving her Honda Civic on Route 22 West in the area of North Adamsville Road when she lost control of her vehicle for unknown reasons and struck a Nissan being driven by Hasmukh Talsania, of Jersey City. Four pedestrians were killed on the highway in two years.
Route 22 has been named the most dangerous road in Somerset County by the Tri-State Transportation Campaign (TSTC), based on data that shows four pedestrians were killed on the highway between 2010 and 2011. The seemingly most dangerous stretch of Route 22, based on the number of deaths, runs through Bridgewater in the vicinity of North Bridge Street to Adamsville Road, areas the New Jersey Department of Transportation is currently putting a focus on for its Route 22 improvements that will include better interchanges in the area of Route 287. The New Jersey Department of Transportation is preparing to begin its short-term improvements on the Route 22 corridor through Bridgewater and Somerville, with a plan to do the work mostly in the overnight hours. According to a release from the NJDOT, Green Construction Inc. is planning to begin preliminary construction activity this week, including sign installation and field mobilization. Available travel lanes will be maintained on Route 22 between 6 a.m. and 9 p.m. during the week while construction continues. Hunterdon County man dies in Monday morning accident near Morgan Lane in Bridgewater.
A Hunterdon County man was killed Monday morning after his vehicle went off the roadway and struck a concrete bridge support on Route 22, Bridgewater Police said. Mark D'Agostino, 50, of Three Bridges, died following the crash that occurred just east of Morgan Lane at about 5:45 a.m. Police are still investigating the accident, and said it's unclear what caused D'Agostino's 2012 Toyota Corolla to leave the roadway. D'Agostino was taken to Somerset Medical Center by the Finderne Rescue Squad and Somerset Medical Center Mobile Intensive Care Unit paramedics, and was pronounced dead at 6:30 a.m., police said. NJDOT held an information session Wednesday.
With a projected starting time of around March 2013, the New Jersey Department of Transportation presented its continued plans for short term improvements on Route 22 Wednesday, including the decision to close the u-turns in the median of the highway. According to a release from the state about the program, NJDOT has found several locations with high accident rates, namely Route 22 between North Bridge Street and Grove Street; the intersection of Grove Street and the North Grove Street overpass; and at the u-turns.
