A Lit Cigarette Ignites Princeton House Fire

No one was injured in the Friday afternoon blaze.

A Moore Street home suffered extensive damage early Friday afternoon after a resident ignited a fire by discarding his lit cigarette on a pile of dry leaves and a plastic rain diverter, according to Princeton Borough Police.  No one was hurt, but about than 60 firefighters and six emergency medical technicians responded to the blaze at 156 Moore Street, the home of Marc and Susana Monseau, police said. A resident of the house called police at 12:42 p.m. and reported that the back of his house was on fire. When police arrived on scene a minute later, the residents were outside and the back of the house was engulfed in flames. The fire had spread from the leaves and the rain diverter to the exterior wall and deck of the house, police said.  …

Funnyman Steve Carell Inspires Princeton Seniors

Be kind, make someone laugh and don't take yourself too seriously, Carell told Princeton seniors.

When comedian Steve Carell went to college, girls rejected him in person. Library books were filled with the history- and dead skin cells and Doritos fingerprints- of the readers beforehand. Google, Facebook and Twitter? They didn’t exist. Now, dates are made- or rejected- via text, more and more books are available on the Kindle or iPad and we rely on technology to get through our daily lives. “As human beings, we should naturally crave contact with one another,” Carell told Princeton University’s Class of 2012 at Class Day on Monday. “But sadly, as the world grows more and more technologically advanced, we lose our ability to connect as human beings. "We have lost touch with our simpler selves, and by "we" I mean you," Carell said. "You …

"In fact, our regular Classical Series concert in May, Spun Beauty, takes place Sunday, May 13 at 4 p.m. at Richardson Auditorium in Princeton," Meredith Laing, spokeswoman for the orchestra, said. The program includes "Disquiet" by Sarah Kirkland Snider, "Piano Concerto in G Major" by Ravel, and "Symphony No. 4" by Brahms. The guest pianist for the concerto will be Rieko Aizawa. State News: Bloomfield Murder, Teacher Sex Charge and Spycam Verdict

A weekly look at news in New Jersey

A man who raped and murdered a New Milford woman in 1976 is up for parole for the fifth time since, and her family is asking the public's help to once again make sure he doesn't become a free man. Acting Essex County Prosecutor Carolyn A. Murray and Special Agent in Charge Michael Ward of the FBI have announced an arrest has been made in connection with the homicide of Bloomfield business owner Joseph Rossi Sr. But the arrest of Jose Rivera, 48, of Plainfield, appears at odds with several New York newspaper articles reporting Rossi's murder was carried out by a mob informant, Nicholas "Nicky Skins" Stefanelli, 69, of Belleville, as an act of retaliation. A Middlesex County jury found Dharun Ravi guilty Friday in the Rutgers webcam spying …

Day Tripper: Out of Town, But In Reach

Get Away While Staying Within Reach in Princeton

Destination lodging has historic background.

You are tired. So is your significant other. You both need a getaway, but can’t afford to go too far away, and it’s kind of an off-season time to take a traditional vacation anyway … what’s there to do? Here’s a thought. The grandparents say they don’t get enough time with their grandkids, so wrap them and their iPads and X-Boxes up, and head for Princeton’s Nassau Inn for the weekend. Lori Rabon, the general manager of the Nassau Inn (located at 10 Palmer Square in Princeton), has plenty of reasons why you’d want to shake off the late-winter blues at her establishment. “The Nassau Inn has maintained its historic ambiance and colonial décor throughout the generations and continues to do so with a renovation project nearing completion, the …
