Founding Fathers Adopted Dogs; How About You?

This Fourth of July, be like George...or John...or Abraham.

Benjamin Franklin was known to enjoy the company of Newfoundlands, while George Washington is credited with creating the American Foxhound breed. Always a man to go his own way, John Adams favored mutts—especially one he named "Satan." The adoptable dogs we're featuring this week may remind us of the Founding Fathers' wisdom in a new way—they're great breeds and could be your next best friend. Contact the rescue groups below to find out how you can do your patriotic part by adopting a new best friend.  Companion Animal Placement (CAP-Hillsborough) is located at 329 Roycefield Road in Hillsborough. Cats and Dogs Make for Best Friends

These adoptable pets could be your next best friend—and possibly each other's.

In "Ghostbusters," Bill Murray's Peter Venkman makes the mayor of New York, played by David Margulies, understand the impending apocalypse with the warning of "cats and dogs living together." In the real world, of course, cats and dogs live together all the time—too often in shelters for homeless animals, and all these cats and dogs need is a home to live with someone in. If any of the featured pets interest you, contact the rescue groups below. Nearly all of the adoptable pets have had all necessary vaccinations and are neutured. Somerset Regional Animal Shelter, at 100 Commons Way in Bridgewater, can be reached at 908-725-0308, or by email to  SRAS.mail@verizon.net. Not Ready to Adopt? Provide a Foster Home Instead

Somerset Regional Animal Shelter and others welcome area residents able to provide temporary help.

Some people love animals, but aren't in ideal circumstances to commit to a life-long best friend. Uncertain living arrangements or perhaps a temporary relocation used to mean skipping out on the companionship an adopted dog or cat can provide—but it doesn't have to anymore. Consider helping area rescue groups as a foster home—the Somerset Regional Animal Shelter is always in need of homes to foster animals for a variety of reasons. A small spare room can be used to temporarily house an orphaned litter, or a kitten or cat recovering from a mild sickness that shouldn't be around other animals; or perhaps help a nervous and frightened animal learn to be a good companion again. You can enjoy the love and joy pets provide, while helping the cat…

Always rescue, don't deal with backyard breeders or those that do not breed for professional show. Also use a dogs size as a measure, small dogs are not stuffed toys and that is why many grow mean and snip especially when children mishandle them even in love. A big dog doesn't mean they are rough and tuff either, many are happy being couch spuds and want nothing more than your love so don't …   more ›
