Several New Jersey museums will open their doors to Bank of America and Merill Lynch cardholders this weekend as part of the bank's "Museums On Us" initiative. The intention of the event is "to provide a cultural benefit to Bank of America cardholders and increase access to the arts across the United States," according to a press release. "The program brings new audiences and increased attention to participating organizations, which range from some of the nation’s most celebrated museums to regional gems and include art, science and history museums, as well as other cultural institutions," the press release said. Some of the biggest names in music take the stage at Madison Square Garden for the live 12-12-12 concert for Sandy relief. While thousands of people fill the arena, billions are watching live on a variety of screens worldwide. The concert is streaming live on television networks, movie theater screens and on the Internet, including right here on Patch. Hillsborough Retro Fitness aiming to help woman with Hodgkin's lymphoma on Monday and Tuesday.
A local fitness center will be among the locations Monday and Tuesday hosting an event seeking a potential bone marrow donor for a Marlboro mother of three who battling Hodgkin's lymphoma. Retro Fitness of Hillsborough will participate along with 25 other store locations in New Jersey in a “Give Me Your Spit” drive to collect DNA from volunteers willing to swab their cheeks. Rob Bonorna, assistant manager of the Hillsborough Retro Fitness location that opened in September, said a station will be set up in the lobby of the business in the Hillsborough Center at 649 Route 206. Christmas comes early this year to Hillsborough as the High School Theatre Company performs Charles Dickens' "A Christmas Carol." And the group also hopes to give to those in need at the same time, looking to collect food donations after Hurricane Sandy swept through the area. Opening night is set for this Thursday evening at 7 p.m., with additional shows Friday at 7 p.m. and two on Saturday at 1 and 7 p.m. Tickets are price at $12 and can be purchased at the company's website by clicking on "box office." Veterans were honored by students and staff at Triangle and Woodfern elementary schools this week, commemorating Veterans Day. At Triangle Elementary School, students sang for veterans during an hour-long school-wide assembly. Afterward, veterans attended a reception in their honor. Many of them were friends and family of the students and staff, and the school extended its thanks and appreciation for their service and dedication. At Woodfern Elementary School, retired Hillsborough High School teacher Barbara-Jo Kruczek played on her bugle to start the school’s Veterans Day assembly. Evening includes two bands and a selection of Creole and Cajun foods at Duke Island Park.
A crowd of nearly 2,000 were on hand at Duke Island Park Sunday for the annual Bayou Fest, part of the Somerset County Park Commission's summer concert series. The park was filled with Zydeco and Creole music from the VooDudes and Opelousas, Louisiana's Jefferey Broussard and the Creole Cowboys. In addition to the music, authentic Creole and Bayou dishes were offered from Touch Bayou in Montclair. The menu included schrimp creole, jambalaya and red beans and rice, among other favorites.
