Committee also approves plan to layoff Social Services director on July 1.

Most Hillsborough employees will see a 2 percent increase in their 2013 salaries, after the Township Committee endorsed a new salary resolution at Tuesday's meeting. The annual resolution fixes the salaries for department heads, Department of Public Works supervisors and non-union employees. Two employees wil see bigger changes in salary: CFO Nancy Haberle, who will receive a $16,262 boost in her annual salary, and Parks and Recreation Director Rich Resavy, who will add the title of director of social services on July 1, after longtime director Tamas Ormosi's position is eliminated. Fireworks Set for June 29

Get ready for township's annual display.

Hillsborough Township will celebrate the Fourth of July with its annual fireworks display on June 29, this year. The event will be held at Auten Road Intermediate School, with the fireworks beginning at about 9:30 p.m. Limited parking for handicapped residents will be available at the school, with very limited parking for others, so officials have set two satellite parking locations with free bus shuttles to ARIS: Hillsborough Middle School and Hillsborough High School. Shuttles will begin operating at 8 p.m. Auten Road will be closed between Triangle Road and Valley Road for about 30 minutes after the fireworks. Police remind residents alcoholic beverages and smoking are not permitted on the school grounds.

Township OKs 'Shop 'Till Your Property Tax Drops' Program

Property owners can receive credit to tax bill; renters, non-resident workers can get cash under "Shop Hillsborough" program.

Last night's pizza and tomorrow's hair appointment could add up to a lower tax bill for those who register in the "Shop Hillsborough" program approved by the Township Committee at Tuesday's meeting. The program, sponsored by Marlboro-based Fincredit Inc., will collect contributions from participating merchants in town based on the sales made by residents presenting special cards. The cards will be sent to all township residents, who will have to register their card online, adding the lot and block information of their property (renters and workers can also participate and would receive a payment at the end of the year instead on a credit applied to property tax bills). Thursday's Community Health Fair at the Hillsborough municipal complex has added programs to the agenda for the day, all aimed at providing helpful information—or an entertaining reason to visit. DOT Grant to Begin Smoothing Homestead Road Travels

Township receives funding for first part of resurfacing project.

Hillsborough will receive $205,000 from the New Jersey epartment of Transportation to undertake the first phase of a resurfacing project on Homestead Road, the office of Gov. Chris Christie announced. The grant is one of 15 made to Somerset County municipalities, totaling $3,143,843, out of 406 Local Aid grants statewide worth $86.5 million. The bulk of the Local Aid grants will be awarded under the Municipal Aid program, with 377 grants totaling $76.2 million. Another 29 Transportation Enhancement grants for quality-of-life, bicycle and pedestrian safety projects totaling $10.3 million were also announced. Both grant programs are competitive, with applications rated on their merits by NJDOT and other transportation officials. “These …

Community Health Fair to Include Medical Professionals, Community Groups

Township sets two sessions of annual event for May 16.

Hillsborough Township Health Department has lined up presenters and events for this year's annual Community Health Fair, with two sessions slated for May 16 at the Peter J. Biondi Building. The sessions include an afternoon program prepared for seniors, with glaucoma, hearing tests and more offered by Princeton Health, Somerset Medical Center and the Community Visiting Nurses Association.  The afternoon session will also feature performances by the Hillsborough Rocket and Rockettes, exercise demonstrations, presentations by the Neshanic Garden Club and refreshments. Garden State residents continue to lead the nation in the cost of auto insurance – and that number may be climbing, according to a recently published report. But in a twist for Somerset County residents, especially those in Hillsborough, residents there pay the least to protect their cars based on premiums, according to a posting on onlineautoinsurance.com that was published Tuesday on NorthJersey.com said. Figures show the average Hillsborough quote is $1,548 while the statewide average comes in around $2,130, the report said. Insurance brokers say crime rates, population density figures and racial breakdown figures account for the lower insurance rates. Hillsborough's long-standing reputation as a tough place to open a business may be crumbling.

After sitting through 90-minutes of township department heads, inspectors and code enforcement officials' presentations on the various functions and duties of their offices at a business forum Wednesday morning, Charles Fung discovered he had inadvertinently cut a corner in getting his business opened. After officials said the first step for anyone hoping to build or open a business in town was to get a zoning use permit, Fung—who is working on opening a Mathnasium franchise in Nelson's Corners—said he hadn't taken that step, which would be certain to spoil his schedule for opening.
