Show NJ Pride and Help Storm Relief Projects

Auten Road students' wristband project one of several local efforts to help Sandy's victims.

Students at Auten Road Intermediate School hope to spot their bright blue "Proud to be from NJ" wristbands on wrists everywhere soon—several school clubs are selling the wristbands to raise money for several non-profits and groups working with victims of Hurricane Sandy. The project is one of a number of similar efforts underway in Hillsborough schools to help Hurricane victims —and struggling families everywhere— rebuild their lives. Money raised from the $3 wristbands will benefit the Red Cross, Hillsborough Food Pantry, the Hillsborough Township Public Schools Philanthropic Fund, and Seer Farms, Inc., a non-profit animal shelter in Jackson, which provides emergency care for animals of families that have endured a natural disaster. Veterans Honored by Hillsborough Students

Triangle and Woodfern schools have special guests while recognizing Veterans Day.

Veterans were honored by students and staff at Triangle and Woodfern elementary schools this week, commemorating Veterans Day. At Triangle Elementary School, students sang for veterans during an hour-long school-wide assembly. Afterward, veterans attended a reception in their honor. Many of them were friends and family of the students and staff, and the school extended its thanks and appreciation for their service and dedication. At Woodfern Elementary School, retired Hillsborough High School teacher Barbara-Jo Kruczek played on her bugle to start the school’s Veterans Day assembly. Students introduced veterans, all family members of the students, that they had brought to school that day. One highlight was when bothers Noah and Adam …

Thank you again to Mrs. Pedersen and Woodfern for giving my husband, Major Robert Movshin, the opportunity to participate in their Veterans Day celebration! My boys were so proud to see their Dad address the school and its guests from so far away. How wonderful that WES takes the time to honor our Veterans near and far, young and old!   more ›

Assistant Superintendent Leaving Hillsborough Schools

Scott Rocco will become superintendent in Spotswood on Jan. 1.

Assistant Superintendent of Schools Scott Rocco is leaving the Hillsborough school district to become the superintendent of Spotswood Public Schools. Rocco, who began his service as a teacher in Hillsborough in 1994, will start his new job on Jan. 1. “Scott has always done amazing things no matter what his role was,” Board of Education member Christopher Pulsifer said at Monday's meeting. Superintendent of Schools Jorden Schiff said Rocco served the school district “with distinction” and his resignation was accepted “with a great deal of regret.” Rocco was the assistant superintendent for human resources. Enrollment in the Spotswood school district is 1,786 students in grades pre-K to 12. The school district serves students from Spotswood …

Hillsborough Schools to Open Wednesday

The district reminding residents classes will resume for the first time since Sandy swept through the area.

After closing for more than a week due to the severity of Hurricane Sandy’s impact on the region, Hillsborough Public Schools are opening for the first time. The district is reminding residents that classes will resume on Wednesday, and that Thursday and Friday will be school days, unlike previously scheduled. Seven consecutive school days have been cancelled due to the severity of the storm. The resulting power outages made an impact on election day, moving six of the township’s 11 polling locations to the high school on Tuesday. School is open Wednesday through Friday this week, which was previously not the case. The NJEA annual educator's convention in Atlantic City was scheduled at the end of the week, but has since been cancelled. The…

School Cancelled Again, Power & Roads Still Out

Auten Road facility opening starting Thursday for branch collection.

The Hillsborough Public Schools will once again be closed on Thursday, the fourth straight day Hurricane Sandy's impact has shut down the district. The district's website still says it will be open on Monday and Wednesday, which had previously been in-service days, to try to limit the impact on other holidays. The district has already exhausted its snow days due to Sandy, according to the website. On Wednesday, Halloween was also cancelled by both the township and Gov. Chris Christie's executive order. The township had originally said more information would come on a makeup date, but its website now said it has bee pushed to Monday per the governor's order. Many Hillsborough streets remained closed throughout Wednesday, as well. An update …

Sandy Brought a Newborn Baby Along With High Winds, Damage

School closed again Wednesday, as 36 roads are shut down throughout the township Tuesday.

The floods didn’t come, but the winds arrived, tearing down power lines, knocking over trees and leaving the township in a post-tropical cyclone induced darkness that might takes many days to relight. In their third conference call on the response to and aftermath of Sandy, township officials said the storm left behind several problems, but overall was not as bad as had been projected for Hillsborough. Instead, they were able to report that only one township resident suffered an injury severe enough to require hospitalization, township facilities fared well–with only a public works shed suffering roof damage and two police cars were damaged by falling limbs–and in the middle of it all a baby was born at an emergency hospital set up in the …

Woodfern Turns 50: From Mimeographs to Laptops

A look at the changes at the school and the nation as the school celebrates its golden anniversary.

In 1962, teachers at the newly opened Woodfern Elementary School stood before blackboards and passed out mimeographed worksheets. Today, as the school marks its 50th anniversary, students can speak with people around the world or download videos onto smart phones or tablet computers from a satellite based communications  system inaugurated in 1962 when Telstar 1, the first electronic telecommunications device–developed in part at Bell Labs in Hillside–was successfully launched. On Saturday, the Hillsborough School District will celebrate the 50th anniversary of Woodfern Elementary with a party from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. The event will feature tours of the facility and a carnival. The district has reached out to alumni and former staff to join …

Drug Testing Input Sought Monday Night

Board of education has asked residents to speak up about the subject at meetings.

Residents will have another opportunity to weigh in on the school district's random drug testing policy on Monday night. The board will be holding its regular meeting at Auten Road Intermediate School, the public portion scheduled for 7:30 p.m. It will serve as yet another opportunity for parents to give their input on the random drug testing policy, something the Board of Education has been asking for since July. The board that month postponed a vote on whether to abolish the policy, opting to table the measure in order to receive more input from the public. The controversial issue again split the board, with some favoring the abolition of the policy and others saying it is another weapon in “the war against drug use.” During the BOE's …

School Emergency Team Grows Even Larger

New staff members receive CERT training in how to handle emergencies.

September, at the beginning of a new school year, is an unusual time to hold a graduation ceremony. But as Scott Rocco, Hillsborough’s assistant superintendent for personnel, said at a recent Board of Education meeting, it was appropriate for a special program. That’s because 25 new staff  members received certificates for successfully completing the school district’s Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) training this summer. CERT members, all volunteers, give critical support to first responders in emergencies, provide immediate assistance to victims, including CPR, organize spontaneous volunteers at a disaster site, suppress fires, and collect disaster intelligence to support first responder efforts. The 27-hour CERT training was …

BoroSAFE Sharing Resources During Suicide Prevention Week

Group helping to raise awareness in Hillsborough community.

This week is National Suicide Prevention Week, and Hillsborough Township Public Schools’ suicide awareness and prevention committee BoroSAFE is hoping to educate and raise awareness in the community. According to the group, suicide is the third leading cause of death of adolescents between the ages of 15-24. There is one completed suicide every 15 minutes in the United States, 100 per day, and 34,000 per year, according to the group BoroSAFE said Hillsborough has experienced 12 confirmed suicides in the last 15 years, statistics it says are significant in a community of Hillsborough's size.  As the township observes the week, BoroSAFE asks residents to take a moment and familiarize themselves with the warning signs of suicide and the …
