Regular Fun For Special Needs Kids

Hillsborough musician entertains — and teaches — special needs children and others at Bernards Township Library.

Hillsborough resident Ann Wild, a mother who also is a folk singer, said that special needs children and their parents often have few opportunities to just relax and have fun between the many "therapy" activities that are part of their weekly routine. But Wild's interactive musical performance and games with special needs children, scheduled on a regular basis at the Bernards Township Library, straddle the magical bridge between entertainment and learning skills ( she also regularly performs at the Hillsborough Public Library). "Music is Magic!" again was presented this past Saturday afternoon at the library with about a half-dozen children who were quiet and fairly serious when they arrived — and far more relaxed and smiling when they had…

Computer Creativity Needed for This Photo Contest

What can you do with photo apps?

Most photography contests seek beautiful sunsets and picturesque scenes...or kittens, but a contest underway at Hillsborough Public Library is looking for entries with a different viewpoint. As part of the library's Teen Tech Week, students in grades 6-12 are invited to enter their slightly manipulated or completely skewed photos for the first-ever Teen Tech Weeek Photogtaphy Contest. The idea grew out of the library's growing use of the social media website Tumblr, Young Adult Librarian Diane Valentine said. "This year, I thought it would be fun for teens to have the opportunity to create on their own with the photography contest," she said. Library Presentation to Highlight DNA Testing's Advances

Whether for medical or personal reasons, more and more people are having their DNA tested. Should you?

DNA testing may be famous for helping solve police mysteries, but there are other mysteries that can be solved with a study of genetic material. Some people are finding it's a useful way to uncover more information about thier own families, opening doors to information predating even the oldest family histories—that proved to be the case for Hillsborough resident Walter Choroszewski, who will be leading a presentation on DNA testing at 7 p.m. Tuesday at the Hillsborough Public Library. Choroszewski's presentation— "ABC’s of DNA: Genetic Genealogy and Personal Genomics"— will include his personal experiences using DNA testing for genealogical and medical purposes. For example, while he said he knew his family name was Polish in origin, he …
