Join Library and March in Memorial Day Parade

You can watch from the roadside—or be a part of it all!

March With The Hillsborough Library In The Memorial Day Parade! – Saturday, May 25 Celebrate Memorial Day by marching with the Hillsborough Public Library in the Hillsborough Memorial Day Parade! We'll have a great time together as we walk the parade route from Auten Road to New Amwell Road to Beekman Lane and end at the municipal complex, a distance of about 1.5 miles. Enjoy the community spirit and be a part of something special! The parade begins at 10:30 a.m. May 25 and lasts about an hour. Stay afterward at the municipal complex for a moving tribute to our veterans in the Garden of Honor. Please note that children under 17 MUST BE accompanied by an adult. Library Giving Away Books

Somerset County Library branches participate in World Book Night.

If you've been meaning to get back into the habit of reading, the Somerset County Library System may have a deal for you: library branches are handing out new books as part of World Book Night. The Hillsborough Library has copies of "Looking for Alaska," by John Green, that will be given out in the program that is seeking to distirbute half a million free books in an ambitious campaign aimed at promoting reading. The mission of World Book Night is to seek out those without the means or access to printed books. Some volunteers in Somerset County will be picking up their books at the Bridgewater Library in Bridgewater, to distribute them at VA hospitals, roller skating rinks, mass transit, nursing homes, schools, food pantries, and more. …

Dwindling Fines Sparks Library Funding Quarrel

Change in agreement between county commission, branch advisory boards gets scrutinized.

For years, members of the Hillsborough Library Advisory Board could count on a budget of about $50,000 each year for use in keeping the library functioning—furniture, equipment and training needs could be dependably paid for with the money paid by procrastinating readers. But with the increasing popularity of electronic books being accessed by library patrons, an unexpected decrease in late book fees is causing headaches for library budgeting. Somerset County Library Commission Chairman Art Carlson, who also is a patron of the local branch, said since the e-books close access to readers at the end of the check-out period, library fines are dropping. He said the drop has only begun to show up recently, with collections dropping 5 to 10 …

The Advisory Board can reduce one of its largest expenses which is D&O insurance if it were appointed by the Township Committee rather than selecting its own members. That money could help offset the reduction in fines.   more ›
