Road closed minutes after reopening from earlier closing.
Police said Valley Road was closed from Roycefield Road to Route 206 at about 6:30 a.m., after a tree fell on the road. The closing came about 20 minutes after police cleared an accident that had closed Valley Road and Roycefield Road at railroad crossings because of an accident at about 4:50 a.m. No information has been issued concerning the accident at this time.

Police investigate string of burglaries.
Workers at a Wraight Road residence under construction reported a burglary to the property Nov. 26, noting appliances, valued at $12,412, were taken from the site sometime in the previous two days, police said. Police are continuing to investigate the theft, as well as five other burglaries or attempted burglaries reported between Nov. 26 and Dec. 9. The reports include:

Hamilton Township cop tries to help catch stray dogs when one bites his foot.
An off-duty police officer from Hamilton Township, in Mercer County, shot a pit bull that bit his foot as the officer attempted to get the dog and another stray out of Route 206 traffic at about 10:20 a.m. Wednesday, police said. The off-duty officer had stopped to help a Hillsborough Rescue Squad member trying to get the stray two pit bulls out of the road between Raider Boulevard and Amwell Road, where the dogs were creating a traffic hazard and in danger of being hit by a vehicle. But as the two approached the dogs, they became aggressive and one attacked the off-duty officer, biting his foot. 15-year-old taken to Robert Wood Johnson Hospital.
A 15-year-old Hillsborough teen was taken to Robert Wood Johnson for treatment of a head injury after being hit by a vehicle on Route 206 Friday afternoon. Police said the accident occurred near the entrance of the Bottle King Liquor Store at about 4:30 p.m., when a Chrysler 300 driven by Leo Halepi, 31, of Cambridge, Mass., hit the teen in the southbound lane. Police said traffic was stop-and-go and the teen tried to run across the road against the traffic lights. Hillsborough Rescue Squad treated the teen at the scene. The Somerset Mobile Intensive Care Unit also responded to the accident. No further details were immediately available.

Several areas of town afflicted by smell of gasoline.
Hillsborough Municipal Utilities Authority personnel and investigators from the New Jersey Department of Environental Protection are trying to pin down the source of gasoline that is seeping into sewers. The source hasn't been found yet, but police said the area around Route 206 and Amwell Road have been most severely impacted Monday. Officials can't confirm the problem is related to reports made by residents on Weber Avenue of gas smells in the basements of several homes. Somerset County Hazmat has been investigating this issue since the first reports were made Saturday afternoon, with subsequent reports made Sunday evening and this morning. Hillsborough Township police reports.
Hillsborough police are investigating two burglaries reported last week, one on East Mountain Road and one on Township Line Road. According to the report, a Township Line Road resident said someone broke into their residence during the daytime Nov. 26 and took electronic items valued at $2,000. The East Mountain Road resident also reported a break-in during daytime, on Nov. 30, and said jewelry valued at $223 was stolen.

Hillsborough police report four burglaries between Nov. 10 and 19.
A Long Hill Road resident reported more than $25,000 worth of jewelry had been stolen sometime during the Nov. 19 daytime hours, police said. The Hillsborough Halloween curfew will be in effect next week, prohibiting minors from public places and streets without a parent or guardian after 10 p.m. According to Hillsborough Police, no one under the age of 18 will be permitted on any "public place, public streets or public property" between 10 p.m. and 6 a.m. from Oct. 28 to Nov. 1 "unless that person is in attendance at a program or function sponsored by the municipality, church or school." The curfew does not apply to any minor who is returning home from "a place of employment, school, fraternal or religious meeting or going to or from a doctors or dentist office," a police statement said. More than $3,600 worth of electronics and tools were stolen during the overnight hours from three vehicles over a three-night span in late September, Hillsborough Police said. According to an incident report released Friday, the vehicles were burglarized on Equator Avenue, Clawson Avenue and Auten Road between Sept. 23 and 25. Electronics and tools with a total value of $3,695 were reported stolen, police said. The incidents remain under investigation. Between Sept. 21 and 28, two homes were also burglarized and two other residential break-in attempts were reported, according to police.

A pair of residential burglaries and two attempted break-ins during an eight-day span are under investigation, Hillsborough Police said. The incidents occurred between Sept. 21 and 28 on East Mountain Road, Perrine Pike, Nottingham Way and Montgomery Road, according to incident reports released Friday by the police department. Maybe the police officers should be trained on how to approach a scared dog that is going to protect itself rather than just winging it and endangering themselves, the dog and any others around them for no reason! Cops think they are tough and Know-it-alls, they should take the time to learn more about dog behaviors before attempting something like this. Or at the very least, call in a K-9 unit …   more ›
