Got a Complaint? Hillsborough Cops Can Tell You What to Do

ACLU study finds many local police don't know the rules for residents to file complaints against them—but Hillsborough's police did.

While the system for citizens to file complaints against police "is riddled with problems," according to a report on WNYC.org, a test of whether or not local police know the procedures for making complaints found Hillsborough officers able to provide the information. State law protects residents who make complaints over police behavior and allows for complaints to be made anonymously. New Jersey Public Radio and the ACLU found that many local police officers apparently do not know the rules for residents to file complaints, according to the report. The ACLU called 497 police departments in New Jersey and asked officers questions about filing complaints. More than half the departments answered at least one question incorrectly, according to…

Three Daytime Burglaries Reported in 10-Day Period

Hillsborough police continue investigating reported break-ins.

Hillsborough police received three reports of burgaries between Jan. 10 and Jan. 20, all occurring during the daytime, according to the homeowners.  Two of the victims are still determining what items may have been taken, but a Surrey Drive resident reported jewelry valued at $17,860 had been taken Jan. 10. A Hockenbury Road resident reported a burglary to the house while it was unoccupied during the daytime hours Jan. 11, while a Zion Road resident reported a similar burglary Jan. 20. Daytime buglaries have often vexed investigators, since neighbors may overlook potentially suspicious visits to a neighbor's house. Many detectives encourage residents to report any unknown vehicles at unattended houses for long periods of time.

In a suit she filed last month, she claims Fariello "illegally assaulted, arrested and detained" her during the traffic stop, when he allegedly threw her to the ground, handcuffed her and placed her in the back of his patrol car, after she requested an …
