Bound Brook Man Killed in Triangle Road Accident
Hillsborough police say vehicle crashed into tree.
Anthony Lorenc, 44, of Bound Brook, died after the 2012 Nissan Maxima he was driving on Triangle Road crashed into a tree in the center median, police said. The accident occurred at 1:42 a.m. Sunday just west of Banor Drive. No other vehicles were involved in the accident. Lorenc was taken to Somerset Medical Center following the accident, where he died from injuries received in the accident. Police closed Triangle Road for about three hours following the accident, and are continuing to investigate the accident. Hillsborough Rescue Squad, Hillsborough Volunteer Fire Co. no. 2 and Somerset Medical Center Paramedics also responded.

Police giving free gun locks.
Amid the national debate on gun control, Hillsborough residents can exercise a little more control over their own guns with free gun locks being offered by Hillsborough police. According to Township Committeewoman, and police liason for the committee, Gloria McCauley, the department will provide two free locks to any household. The locks are manufactured by Remington, and work on most handguns, rifles and shotguns, she said at Tuesday's meeting. For those more interested in reducing the number of guns in their household, Somerset County Proescutor Geoffrey Soriano announced a gun buy-back event for April 5 and April 6. Burglary Reports Drop in February
After incident reports increase over six-month period, February marks a decline.
Hillsborough police have investigated 24 residential burglaries since August 2012, with the last reported Feb. 1, when a Zion Road resident reported $64,223 worth of jewelry taken after an afternoon burglary to the property. That brings the total value of items taken in the burglaries at $143,921. Police received a steady stream of reports through much of the fall of 2012 and into January, with only October reporting no burglaries. During that span, the incidents appeared to increase in frequency in western neighborhoods of the township. The map indicates the burglary reports by month (color of marker), amount of property stolen (large markers indicate more than $5,000 in property stolen), and general location of the burglaries.

Jewelry, Handgun Taken in Two Alleged Burglaries
Hillsborough police investigating burglaries reported Jan. 14 and Jan. 16.
Hillsborough police are investigating a pair of burglaries reported the week of Jan. 14 in which residents reported items valued at more than $9,000 in total had been stolen. An Amwell Road resident reported a daytime burglary to their residence on Jan. 14, noting the thieves took items valued at $4,905 including a handgun. That report was followed by a burglary reported occurring on Zion Road during the evening of Jan. 16. The resident reported jewelry valued at $4,348 was taken in the incident. Police are also investigating the theft of a Freightliner truck, valued at $20,000, from a Beekman Lane property. The truck was stolen sometime between Jan. 24 and Jan. 25, police said.

Check-Kiting Scam Defrauds Credit Union, Cops Say
At least two people believed involved in plan to defraud credit union.
Green Brook, Hillsborough and East Orange Police are investigating a check kiting scam that defrauded Affinity Federal Credit Union of $567 between Jan. 9 and Jan. 30, according to police reports. According to a report field by a loss control officer with the credit union, a woman opened savings an checking accounts at the Hillsborough branch of Affinity on Jan. 9. On two subsequent occasions in the next five days, a man deposit checks to the checking account—including a $2,500 deposit made in Green Brook on Jan. 14. Eight minutes after making that deposit, a withdrawal was made at an ATM in Dunellen, according to the bank, even though the checks deposited had not cleared issuing banks. Riverside Drive Man Drowns in Raritan River, Cops Say
80-year-old was cutting trees when he fell down embankment, according to police.
An 80-year-old Hillsborough man drowned Sunday in the Raritan River after falling down an embankment outside his Riverside Drive home, police said. Raymond Goodrich was pronounced dead at about 7 p.m. Sunday, after Hillsborough police and rescue squad volunteers responded to a report of an unresponsive man found in the Raritan River. Police said the initial investigation found Goodrich had been pruning trees on his property along the river when he apparently fell down a steep embankment. He was unresponsive when pulled from the river, and was pronounced dead at the scene by Somerset MICU. Police are continuing to investigate the incident. Hillsborough firefighters and the New Jersey Regional Medical Examiner also responded to the incident.

Rising Raritan Closed River Road
Runoff from Thursday night rain caused localized flooding in area.
River Road in Hillsborough was closed Friday afternoon, after the Raritan River flooded in the low-lying area near the Lyman Street Bridge into Raritan. The road is closed between the Lyman Street Bridge and Roycefield Road. According to the U.S. Geological Survey monitoring, water levels should begin receding soon. The USGS monitors show levels of the South Branch already dropping at Neshanic Station, while the North Branch is cresting. Downstream, the Raritan River flooded in Manville's low-lying Duke Park but has not flooded the roads yet. The USGS forecast calls for the river to rise more in Manville, before receding. The Millstone River is also still rising, but is not flooding at this time. The flooding complicates today's already …

Drunk Driving Crackdown Continues in Hillsborough
Police department participates in 'Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over' program.
Driving home from the office party after imbibing too much punch at the office party may be more likely to draw police attention this month, as Hillsborough police work to crackdown on drunk driving. The township confirmed last week the police are participating in the NJ Division of Highway Safety's "Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over" year-end statewide crackdown. The program runs from Dec. 7 through Jan. 2, 2013, focused on increased enforcement of drunk driving laws. New Jersey law defines a blood alcohol content level of 0.08 percent or higher as intoxicated. Railroad Van Hit by Train
No injuries reported after company vehicle gets stuck on tracks.
No injuries were reported after a train hit a Norfolk Southern Railroad vehicle after it got stuck on the train tracks at 4:10 a.m. Friday. Police said Richard Vallera, 67, of Stewartsville, was driving the Ford van alongside the tracks when it jumped a track and became stuck. An oncoming westbound Norfolk Southern train, operated by Sean Simon, 45, of Robbinsville, was unable to stop before hitting the van, pushing it into a railroad crossing arm and breaking it. Vallera was not in the van when the train hit it. The accident closed both Valley and Roycefield roads for about 90 minutes as the accident investigation was underway.
