Students enrolled in the Hillsborough Family YMCA’s all-day kindergarten, kindergarten enrichment, Pre-K Plus and Five Day Little Sprouts classes took part in a Swim-A-Thon, using the skills they've learned in thier weekly swim classes to raise funds for the Y’s Strong Kids annual support campaign. Teachers Lynn Masters and Koryn Palumbo created the Swim-A-Thon, giving the children not only the opportunity to demonstrate the progress made in their instructional swim classes, but they were able to use those skills to help others in the community. The children collected pledges for each lap they swam for the event held April 16 and 17 at the Hillsborough Family YMCA. The Y’s annual support campaign provides assistance for children and others…

Event showcases center's programs and offers fun, games and information.
The Hillsborough branch of the Somerset Valley YMCA marked Healthy Kids Day Saturday, along with the other local Y branches, drawing about 350 to the center for a variety of activities. Kids enjoyed games and face painting, while mom and dad could learn about heart safety, donate blood—or check out the Y's facilities. Healthy Kids is a national initiative to improve the health and well-being of families now and throughout the summer, a time when kids are often less physically active and engaged in learning. “At the Somerset Valley YMCA, we know parents struggle to keep their kids physically and intellectually active every day. We want to help ensure fewer kids are at risk of childhood obesity and more kids excel in school,” said Karyn …

Louise Galluccio found the YMCA when she was looking for a place where she could connect with others after moving to the township a year ago. Not only has she made new friends, she was also inspired to begin an exercise program that helped her to lose 35 pounds, prompting her physician to congratulate her on her improved health and wellness. “I never realized how much the Y had to offer people of all ages,” said Ms. Galluccio, 57. “The staff and members are friendly and helpful and they motivated me to do all kinds of things, swimming, cardio and aerobics. And with the support I get from my friends at the Y, I have been able to maintain my good health.” To ensure the Y can provide all community residents with the same life-enhancing …

The following was submitted by the Somerset Valley YMCA. Growing up, Matt Gray’s favorite memories are of camp. Now he’s running his own camp program at the Hillsborough Y, and he brings with him an abundance of enthusiasm and experience. “Some of my fondest childhood memories revolve around the various camps I attended, both at as a camper and later as a counselor,” said Gray, who grew up in Long Hill and recently joined the Hillsborough Y as director of summer camp and after-school care. “I hope to create those same memories for the kids in our camp programs. The first two weeks of camp this summer already have given campers many memorable moments. A dog, ferret and an owl made an appearance in a session for Future Veterinarians, while …
