High School Football Classifications Released

NJSIAA incorporates the new Group V this season.

The New Jersey State Interscholastic Athletic Association released its classifications this week for the upcoming high school football season, following the executive committee's approval to create a Group V designation in the four public school sections in May. "This creates a greater opportunity for schools and for student-athletes," Jack DuBois, NJSIAA assistant director who is in charge of football, said following the approval. "It increases the number of teams playing in the playoffs from 128 to 160. At the same time, it eliminates 16 consolation games that schools didn't want to play anyway." Raiders Fight Back From 15 Point Deficit To Beat Ridge

Raiders' second-half comeback stymies Ridge.

The Hillsborough High School boys basketball team traveled to Ridge Tuesday evening. The Raiders chipped away in the third quarter to take lead within last minute. IN SHORT Tuesday night's basketball game was a tale of two teams and both of them were Ridge.  The first half, the Devils dominated the court.  Lead by Dillon Mahon and his 13 first half points, Ridge went up by 15 points just minutes into the second half.  But Hillsborough was not to be denied.  Holding the Devils to only two baskets from the floor and three free throws in the third quarter, the Raiders turned the tables.  With a pair of 3's from Kevin Grek and five points from Devonn Foster, the Raiders were down by three at the end of the third quarter, 34-37. Hillsborough Cheerleaders Going to Disney World

Raiders cheerleaders will compete in national competition.

Hillsborough High School’s competition cheerleading squad to Walt Disney World on the weekend of Feb. 11, to compete in a national cheer competition. The Raiders cheerleaders will now be one of approximately 60 teams nationwide with the chance at a national championship. The team will have to make it through the competition’s preliminary, semifinal and final rounds for the right to be called champions. Not bad for a team that has had to make adjustments on the fly due to injuries to several of its members. “We’ve had practice since August for this with choreography and gymnastics,” said Raiders Head Coach Jessica Fedroff. “We’ve actually had quite a few injuries, so we’ve had to change a lot of things. Raider Wrestlers Win Close Contest Over Montgomery

Pins by seniors Price and Roessner lead to victory

The Hillsborough High School wrestling team hosted Montgomery for a match Wednesday night.  Senior night special for team and Andrew Roessner winning by pin at 285 pounds. Montgomery 31, Hillsborough 34 Adam LaBracio (H) pinned Jake Yu (M), 2:28 Lenny Bird (M) dec. Louis White (H), 2-0 Rhys Weinberger (H) dec. Louis Colonna (M), 7-2 Mike Boyer (M) pinned Mateusz Zalewski (H), 1:09 IN SHORT Prior to the match, the Raider senior wrestlers were honored and introduced to the crowd.  The seniors are: Paul Lyko, Matt McLaughlin, Shane Oryniak, Mackey Price, Andrew Roessner and Yohance Smith. Vangeli Propels Girls Past Immaculata

Boys Fall to 5-2.

Fueled by Kristina Vangeli’s 18-point day, the Hillsborough Girls Basketball team rolled to its third win of the season with a 55-25 triumph over Immaculata Thursday in Hillsborough.   The Raiders headed into halftime sporting a three-point lead, but it was a dominant second half that saw Hillsborough outscore Immaculata 30-8, that secured the Raider win. Ashley Cease finished with 10 points and Kristina Dunphey added nine points, as nine Raider girls scored in the win, improving Hillsborough 3-4 this season. Kat Papalski finished with eight points for Immaculata (3-5). Raiders Swims Teams Split Wins With Bridgewater

A close match resulted in a win for the girls team.

The Hillsborough High School Boys and Girls Swim Teams traveled to Bridgewater to face the Panthers Tuesday afternoon.  The teams took a split with the girls winning by a slim margin of 4 points and the boys losing. Poor Shooting Dooms Boys Basketball

Raiders 53 attempts yield few baskets.

The Hillsborough High School Boys Basketball team took on the Panthers of Bridgewater Tuesday evening at Hillsborough in a game of unbeaten teams. The Raiders winning streak ended at five as the Panthers defeated the Raiders 39-29 .   1st 2nd 3rd 4th Total Bridgewater (6-0) 9 7 4 19 39 Hillsborough (5-1) 8 6 3 12 29   IN SHORT The Raiders couldn’t buy a basket in this game as they collectively shot 9-for-53 from the floor, including 3-for-17 from beyond the 3-point arc. Sophomore Matt Hornich led the Raiders with 9 points on 3-for-15 shooting. As poor as the Raiders offense was, the Panthers let the Raiders hang around for most of the game, as the Raiders only trailed by 3-points after the third quarter. Athletes of the Year: Gina Li and John Von Nessen

Gina Li (tennis) and John Von Nessen (football, lacrosse) are Hillsborough Patch’s Athletes of the Year

Gina Li A 4-year varsity tennis player, Li was the Raiders’ number 1 singles player from early in her freshman year. In 2011 she compiled a 24-1 singles record, only losing to eventual state runner-up Joanna Zalewski. Li was the 2011 Somerset County champion and was named first team all County, first team all Group 4 and second team All State. The Rutgers bound Li compiled a 79-12-2 singles record for Hillsborough, with all but her first five matches as a freshman as Hillsborough’s first singles player. John Von Nessen A multi-sport athlete, Von Nessen has earned varsity letters in both football and lacrosse at Hillsborough. The Penn-State bound Von Nessen has been the Raiders starting quarterback since his sophomore year and in 2011 threw…

The Hillsborough High School girls basketball team defeated Sayreville Thursday in the consolation game of the third annual Hillsborough Holiday Classic. Kristina Vangeli led the way for the home team with 28 points as the Raiders overwhelmed the Bombers 53-29.   1st 2nd 3rd 4th Total Sayreville 5 9 6 9 29 Hillsborough 17 14 17 5 51   OVERVIEW The Raiders came out on a mission in this game, hustling on both ends of the court for the entire 32-minutes.
