Sundae 'Survivor' Has Sweet Rewards for Students

Fundraiser returns to Hillsborough High for a second year.

Four sweet sundaes could net a big payday for Hillsborough High School's students. That's because Super Sundaes will reprise its class-versus-class Sundae Survivor competition, where each of the four grades designs a treat and competes to see which class can raise the most cash in sales. The competition began March 1, and runs until March 25. Each sundae is $5. Each class will get $1 for each of their sundaes sold. The class cabinets created four exciting sundaes. All sundaes have two portions of ice cream and three toppings and all are topped with whipped cream and a cherry. The Seniors’ theme is Stars & Stripes and they named their sundae, “Oh Say Can You Sundae!”  It consists of vanilla ice cream with cookie dough, Mini M&Ms and hot …

Donated Dresses Key to Fundraiser Success

Dress sale aims to top last year's success.

Welcome to the Dress Barn. That’s the greeting you might get when entering Patti Forti’s garage. About 350 dresses hang from racks installed in her roof, while others wait to be taken out of cardboard boxes that line the free space. And, though the dress count is upward of 300 gowns, Forti and Gwen Christiana are still collecting formal, semi-formal and cocktail-style dresses. It’s all part of the preparations for Project Graduation’s Third Annual Formal Wear Sale, set for March 3 at Hillsborough High School. The sale, which has become a fixture for the Project Graduation Committee, collects new and gently worn formal wear from residents, colleagues, friends and community members and resells the items at prices ranging from $10 to $50. “We…

Auten Road Students Raise $10K for American Heart Association

Annual Hoops for Heart fundraiser focuses on health and activity.

A regular 40-minute gym class at Auten Road Intermediate School added up to $10,191.53 for the American Heart Association this October. The school raised the $10,000 during its annual Hoops for Heart fundraiser by appealing to friends and family for support. Sixth-grader Allie Benadon claimed the top fundraising spot, raising $1,095 for the cause. The fundraiser has the students shooting hoops during their regularly scheduled gym classes, and includes an added focus on the factors contributing to heart diseases and strokes, according to the district. In addition to focusing on basketball skills, the students learn about physical activity’s importance as a preventative measure, nutrition, and hereditary factors that contribute to heart …

Resolutions Highlight of New Year's Run

Hillsborough's Annual Resolution Run draws 600 people, lofty goals and fun for the family.

"Qualify for Boston (Marathon)."  "Stop getting lost on my way home from work."  "To floss every day." The resolutions submitted when registering for Hillsborough's Jan. 1 Resolution Run range from simple activities—like flossing teeth—to much loftier goals—qualifying for one of the most well-known marathons in the world—but, not matter what the resolutions are, all race participants are expected to submit one when registering. And, they have a chance to win a prize for the most unique pledge of the coming year. That's the spirit embodied during the race's creation ten years ago, according to Race Director and organizer Gary Verhoorn. "Basically, we wanted to have a local race that would be fun to do on New Year's Day," Verhoorn said.  "I…
