Runoff from Thursday night rain caused localized flooding in area.
River Road in Hillsborough was closed Friday afternoon, after the Raritan River flooded in the low-lying area near the Lyman Street Bridge into Raritan. The road is closed between the Lyman Street Bridge and Roycefield Road. According to the U.S. Geological Survey monitoring, water levels should begin receding soon. The USGS monitors show levels of the South Branch already dropping at Neshanic Station, while the North Branch is cresting. Downstream, the Raritan River flooded in Manville's low-lying Duke Park but has not flooded the roads yet. The USGS forecast calls for the river to rise more in Manville, before receding. The Millstone River is also still rising, but is not flooding at this time. The flooding complicates today's already …

Officials montoring water levels, power outages. Reports say flooding may not be as bad as Irene.
The township is monitoring the progress of Hurricane Sandy as it prepares to smash into New Jersey later Monday, said Mayor Carl Suraci. The storm is forecast to deliver winds ranging between 40 to 60 mph with some areas facing hurricane-force winds of more than 75 mph over a span of nearly 800 miles with New Jersey near its center. The storm could produce rain falls ranging from 4 to 6 inches to more than a foot. Hillsborough's emergency radio station 1610 AM was experiencing technical difficulties late Monday morning, according to an alert by the Hillsborough Police Department. The department issued the alert at 11:25 a.m. through Nixle. The alert said information on road closures will come through Nixle. Hillsborough opened its …

Hurricane will bring a variety of hazards and up to 8 inches of rain as it wreaks havoc throughout East Coast, according to federal officials.
As Hurricane Sandy travels toward the East Coast, New Jersey residents should brace for a slow deterioration of the weather well before landfall early next week, according to officials from the Federal Emergency Management Agency. Additional damage from Sandy is expected, because the hurricane is expected to lose speed by the time it makes landfall. This will extend the period of heavy wind and rainfall, according to NOAA's National Hurricane Center Director Dr. Rick Knabb. Sandy is expected to bring between 5 and 8 inches of rain to the affected area, NOAA's National Centers for Environmental Prediction Director Dr. Louis Uccellini said. Between 50 and 60 million people will be impacted by Sandy well into next week. "It's difficult to …

Hillsborough used lessons it learned from Hurricane Floyd to help during last year's storm.
When the normally placid Millstone River becomes a monster and slams into the raging Raritan River in the Lost Valley section of Manville, Hillsborough officials know that an entire section of the township will likely be under water. That’s what they anticipated last August when weather reports indicated Hurricane Irene, a 500-mile wide behemoth was going to strike furiously at New Jersey. In response, township officials jumped into action three days before the hurricane hit the region, posting evacuation notices, preparing the emergency shelter and planning, planning, planning. Find out how the after 30 years of study and Irene, flooding from the Millstone Rive is still hard to pin down. John Sheridan, the township’s emergency management …

Study will be a starting point for the Raritan-Millstone Flood Control Commission.
A non-profit organization based in Hillsborough will be applying for a grant to help give the Raritan-Mllstone Flood Control Commission a kickstart. Angela Clerico, of the World Institute for Natural Resources (WINS), told the Township Committee last week that the $10,000 Sustainable Jersey grant funded by PSE&G, will be used to gather and study all of the literature and studies about flooding in the Raritan and Millstone rivers that serve as the northern and eastern borders of the township. “What is out there already?” she said. The Raritan-Millstone Flood Commission was formed to explore ways in which the flooding along the two rivers can be mitigated. A similar commission, the Green Brook Flood Control Commission, was created in the mid…

Manville resident concerned Hillsborough housing developments are going to impact already food-prone areas.
A Manville resident expressed concern Tuesday night to the Hillsborough Township Committee regarding construction projects that could worsen already flood-prone areas. Richard Onderko, speaking on behalf of several fellow Manville residents, approached the committee in hope the township considers the impact of construction projects—such as housing projects on Falcon and Valley roads—on the quality of life in the region. “Before any board approves future projects in Hillsborough, we ask that the quality of life for the entire region be considered, and not just what’s best for the tax revenues of the township,” Onderko said. “We need cooperation from the entire county and surrounding municipalities to solve a flooding issue that is now out …

The multi-municipality commission hopes to find a solution to flooding problems in the Millstone and Raritan Rivers.
The Township Committee unanimously approved a resolution to join the Raritan and Millstone Rivers Flood Control Commission, in the hopes of mitigating flooding issues in town. By approving the resolution, the town joins Manville, Millstone, Rocky Hill, Montgomery, Franklin, Bridgewater and South Bound Brook in addressing flooding from the Raritan and Millstone Rivers. The commission aims to prevent future floods and alleviate flooding and flood-related hazards, according to the resolution. Each municipality has two representatives on the commission, and may appoint two alternate representatives who represent the municipality if a regular representative is unable to attend a meeting. In Hillsborough, regular representatives can be a member …
