'Permanent' Pipeline Repair Underway

Company expects work to be finished without any disruption to traffic.

Buckeye Pipe Line workers are back beneath Route 206, this time making a permanent fix to the pipeline that leaked more than 2,300-gallons of gasoline in early December. Company spokesman David Boone said an approximately 50-foot section of the steel pipeline is currently being replaced by crews working 24 hours per day. "Work is continuing until we complete the repair, which we expect will be the end of the week," he said, adding work is currently projected to be finished by Saturday. The work is not expected to cause any additional traffic problems on Route 206. The pipeline was installed in the 1950s, Boone estimated, and is regularly checked for corrosion, deterioration or cracks by robotic equipment—this area was last tested in 2011…

Route 206 Reopens as Pipeline Back in Service

Temporary repairs completed, company says.

Buckeye Pipe Line Co. said the temporary repair to the damaged section of the pipeline in Hillsborough has been completed, and the pipeline was put back in service at 7:30 a.m. Tuesday morning. The company said cleanup and remediation of the area where the pipeline leaked an estimated 2,310 gallons of gasoline continues, and planning for permanent repairs is underway. "We have effected what you could call a 'permanent temporary' repair, in that it can last for a long time," Buckeye spokesman David Boone said.   Boone said the company installed a steel sleeve 20-24-inches in length over the leaking section of the pipeline, which is beneath Route 206, near the eastern side of the roadway. The sleeve—called a "Plimco sleeve" is held in place …

Pipeline Company Planning Temporary Repair

Company issues statement noting plans to make permanent repair later.

The Buckeye Pipe Line Co. issued a statement noting current work to repair the gas leak that occurred in the pipeline is expected to be done sooner than previously expected. However, that may be due to the company's plans to make a temporary repair—and to come back later for a more permanent replacement.    "We are optimistic that we will be able to install a temporary repair sleeve and safely return the line to service sooner than previously announced," the company said. "Preparations are also underway for a permanent repair, which will be performed on a later date." DEP Spokesman Larry Ragonese said the company pinpointed the location of the leak Monday, and the repair plans include removing the damaged section of the pipeline and …

2,300 Gallons Leaked, Gas Pipeline Company Says

About 258 gallons recovered so far.

In a press release issued Saturday afternoon, Buckeye Pipe Line Co. said it has determined about 55 barrels of gasoline —2,310 gallons— leaked from the pipeline, a quantity much higher than initially reported. The determination was made from the ongoing environmental investigation at the site, as well as further analysis of the pipeline's pressure monitoring data. The company said it has notified the National Response Center, and local, state and federal officials of the amount. The company has been working on cleaning up the leak for a week, and said the Spill Management Team recovered 268 gallons of gasoline as of 5:15 p.m. Friday. As part of the cleanup, the work is vacuuming gasoline liquid, as well as excavating soil with gas in it…

Leak 'Not a Major Rupture,' Pipeline Spokesman Says

Company says about 25 gallons of gas believed to have leaked as cleanup continues.

Work crews are working through the night to cleanup gas that escaped through a small leak in a 20-inch gasoline pipeline, detouring southbound traffic between New Amwell and Amwell roads. According to Buckeye Pipe Line's Incident and Crisis Management Team information officer David Boone, about 25 gallons are believed to have escaped from the leak on Monday. The leak has been traced to an area beneath Route 206, where the pipeline is encased within a concrete sleeve. "We are aware of aproximately where the leak is; we are investigating to find out what has caused it," Boone said. "It is a leak, it's not a major rupture by any means." He added the area of the leak is "safe and secure." The cleanup involved vacuuming the gas and water out of…
