Joseph DeLorenzo, Evan Edelman receive proclamations from township

Two recent Hillsborough High School graduates–Joseph DeLorenzo and Evan Edelman–were honored by the Township Committee on Tuesaday. DeLorenzo was recognized for becoming an Eagle Scout and Edelman was honored for leading the Hillsborough High School baseball team to county and sectional championships. DeLorenzo, a member of Troop 186, will be attending Rowan University in Glassboro for a dual degree in history and education. His Eagle Scout project was repairing a retaining wall that prevented erosion at an in-ground pool at the Elks’ Camp Moore in northern New Jersey. Hillsborough Falls Short in Group 4 Title Game

After double play ends Raiders' best threat, Manalapan earns win with two-run homer.

Hillsborough High School baseball coach Norm Hewitt took the blame square on himself. The play came in the top of the sixth inning with the bases loaded in Saturday's 2-0 loss to Manalapan in the Group 4 state title game at Toms River North. With the game scoreless against Manalapan, Raiders' catcher Tyler Ferrati took a Joseph Serrapica pitch and smacked a liner in what appeared to be heading into shallow left field to at least score a run. But the projection of the ball just seemed to hold up in the air. Manalapan shortstop Brian Lamboy went out and was able to snatch the liner in shallow left field. He turned around and threw to second base and got Raiders' Pat Roberts at second for a double play and ended Hillsborough's best threat. …

VIDEO: Coach Credits Players, Wife for 600 Wins

44 years of coaching has brought victories and more for Norm Hewitt.

When talking to Hillsborough High School baseball coach Norm Hewitt, he made one thing clear: His players and the game at hand was more important than the thought of his compiled wins. "Coaches don't win games, players win games," Hewitt said.  Coaching for more than four decades, Hewitt gives most to the credit to his wife, Peg, who is been at his side "since I was 15 years old." Hewitt, a Watchung Hills Regional High School grad, beat his alma mater last week to earn his 600th career coaching victory. The Hewitts have been married for 44 years and Norm said he would not be in coaching had it not been for his wife.  "I was out of coaching for three years after I got out of college," Hewitt said. "Peg said 'I know you love the game and I …

Poll: Out or Safe? You Make the Call

It was a bang-bang play at the plate. What do you think the call should have been?

A close call in the bottom of the eighth inning solidified a trip to the second round of the NJSIAA North 2, Group IV playoffs for the Hillsborough High School baseball team, while Watchung Hills Regional High School saw its season end. With two outs and the Raiders leading by one run with the Warriors at the plate, the pitch got past the catcher. Pinch runner Eric Zadrozny sprinted home and dove in at the same time catcher Tyler Ferretti dove back for the tag. The call on the field was out, ending the game at 3-2 for the Raiders. What do you think should have been called? A photo of the play, as well as a YouTube video show, the action. Should the call have been safe, out, or do you think it was too close for you to call? Let us know in …

Catcher hit the plate with his glove before the runner's hand did. I trust the call from the ump MORE (for a change... if anyone says I said this... I'll deny it... LOL) because he was at a better angle.   more ›

Wild State Win Gives Baseball Coach His 600th

It took a fast-paced play at the plate and an extra inning, but Hillsborough is moving on.

There was something in the air. Black clouds loomed with bright sunshine as the two teams took the field at Diamond Nation in Flemington. Both teams knew the value of victory: one team gets to play another state game on Friday. And the Hillsborough High School baseball team, still high off its Somerset County Championship win on Saturday, had one other goal: get coach Norm Hewitt his 600th win. It took an extra inning and a wild play at the plate, but the Raiders were able to both move on and notch the milestone victory, as they defeated Watchung Hills 3-2 in the tournament's first round. The action from the mound was terrific for both teams. Raider hurler Paul Mammino was stellar in the starting role, going 6 1/3 innings giving up eight …

Hillsborough Looks for 'Right Mix' Down the Stretch

As Raiders prepare for Somerset County Tournament semifinals, team looks for consistency.

As the Hillsborough High School baseball team searches to find the "right mix," the Raiders are also preparing for a Somerset County Tournament semifinal clash with Immaculata on Saturday night at TD Bank Ballpark in Bridgewater. The Raiders' slide continued on Thursday in a 4-3 loss to Bridgewater on the road. "We are not playing very well right now," coach Norm Hewitt said. "We have 12 seniors and a great pitching staff. We were ranked No. 1 coming into the season so we got the 'kiss of death.' We have not been playing well under pressure. In the last 35 innings, we scored four runs." Hillsborough scored the first two runs against Bridgewater as Matt Hornich connected on a home run in the second inning for the early advantage. In the …
