Raiders Boys Get Tough 4th-Quarter Win

Trio leads way for Hillsborough against Immaculata.

A packed house was on hand to watch the Hillsborough High School boys basketball team go toe to toe with Immaculata on Thursday night, with the Raiders riding out a see-saw affair, 59–54, over the Spartans. Hillsborough trailed as late as the seven-minute mark, when Greg Faenza nailed two free throws to give the team a 40-39 lead. It was his third and fourth straight points, and it propelled the Raiders to a lead they would never relinquish. Kenny Gan and Mike Morelli took charge of the game to close it out, scoring a combined 11 points. Gan led the Raiders with 26 points on the game. Down by six points, Immaculata took a timeout to regroup and attempt a comeback, closing the gap to 55-52 with 30 seconds left on the clock. Morelli's free-…

Hillsborough Wrestling Hopes to Gain Experience

A year after the Raiders won the Somerset County title, they'll have to grow up to repeat.

For Hillsborough High School wrestling coach Steve Molinaro, growth is the most important word in 2010-11. Molinaro's team is off to a 4-6 start, a year after going 18-6 and winning the Somerset County title. "Lately it seems that if we don't gain bonus points at the lower weights, we're struggling," Molinaro said. "Compared to the past years it has been a struggle." However, in Molinaro's 19th season as head coach, he has seen effort from his squad as it continues push toward another championship run. The Raiders have gotten no help from an extremely difficult schedule that included a trip to St. Augustine Prep for matches with Haddonfield and Central High School on Thursday, just a day after competing in the Penn-Jersey Duals at Harry S…

Raider Boys Basketball Clinches Holiday Classic Championship Title

Senior Kenny Gan led the team with 23 points, while senior guard Steve Hydzik contributed eight points and senior guard Mike Morelli tossed in seven points.

The Hillsborough Boys Basketball got off to a strong start in Wednesday's Holiday Classic, taking control of the ball from Hightstown High School early in the first quarter before before holding on to win 48-38 for their second championship title in the holiday tournament. Hillsborough opened the game with a barrage of shots, with senior forward Kenny Gan scoring eight straight points to power the Raiders to a 15-6 lead after the first quarter. Hillsborough allowed Hightstown to get back in the game in the second quarter. The Raiders only scored five points while the Rams put 12 points on the board. Hillsborough put some distance between themselves and Hightstown in the second half. The Raiders stifled the Rams in the third quarter giving…

Hillsborough Girls Fall Short in Holiday Classic Basketball Championship

Raiders unable to bounce back from tough second quarter.

A rough second quarter that produced just four points doomed the Hillsborough High girls basketball team in a 36-30 loss to Delaware Valley Thursday in the second annual Hillsborough Holiday Classic championship game. The first quarter ended with Hillsborough and Delaware Valley nodded 11-11, but the turning point of the game came in the second quarter when the Raiders' offense was shut down for much of the quarter. Hillsborough dug itself a hole after missing several 3-point shots. The Raiders also failed to put up points in the paint during that quarter. The Raiders' lone points came off a free throw by senior guard Melissa McEnroe with 2:59 remaining and senior guard Stephanie LaManna followed with a 3-pointer as Hillsborough trailed 22…

Board of Ed Recognizes Student Achievements

Band, girls cross country and gymnastics winning seasons acknowledged.

They won state competitions and received national titles, and the Board of Education chose to honor them Monday night. For the students in the Hillsborough High School marching band, cross country team and gymnastics team, the hard work they put in during their seasons was recognized. While all of the Hillsborough High School marching band's 108 members did not attend the meeting, its win at the United States Scholastic Band Association state championships did not go unnoticed.  The band last won the state championship in 2006 and went on to win the association's Northern States Championships—a first for the band, according to Assistant Director Ray Fantuzzi. The band then took fifth place at the United States Scholastic Band Association …

3-pointers Fuel Hillsborough Boys Basketball Team

Raiders connect 13 times from beyond the arc to sink Phillipsburg.

The first half of the Hillsborough-Phillipsburg boys basketball game looked more like a 3-point contest on Tuesday night. Hillsborough clung to a four-point lead at halftime after making six 3-pointers while Phillipsburg made five. Then, Coach Ian Progin made a few adjustments at halftime and it paid off. The Raiders (2-0), outscored Phillipsburg (1-1), 31-17  in the second half on their way to a 59-41 victory at Hillsborough High School. Progin said the second half was the key and he was not pleased with the team's defense in the first half. "I thought we allowed too many outside shots we weren't up on guys the way that we should have been and in the second half we made that adjustment," Progin said. Hillsborough's offense relied on its 3…
