New York Yankees and Manchester City have teamed up to bring a new professional soccer team to NYC by 2015.
The New York Red Bulls, who call Harrison their home, will not be the only face of professional footy in the metropolitan area for much longer. New York City is planning to kick the ball around in the MLS come the spring of 2015. Major League Soccer Commissioner Dan Garber announced the birth of the newest franchise in the MLS: the New York City Football Club. The new club will be owned by 2012 Barclay’s Premier League champions Manchester City and the 27 time World Series champion New York Yankees. “This opportunity is huge for us and huge for the city. We will work to deliver good, beautiful football to the fans in New York,” said Manchester City CEO Ferran Soriano. “We are very happy and honored to have the Yankees as partners.” Yankees…

Watchung Hills led by Abby Cline and MVP Dana Mertz in 3-1 victory.
Saturday's Somerset County softball final came down to the two teams that fought for the crown last year: Watchung Hills and Hillsborough. And just like in 2012, the Watchung Hills Warriors left as champions, with a 3-1 victory. 1 Hillsborough drew first blood, scoring in the second inning on a line drive by Jess Santelli, sending courtesy runner Josette Spenser home. But that would prove to be the only run the Raiders would score. Watchung Hills would get on the board in the fourth inning when McKayla Brady's single slid up the middle, which scored courtesy runner Madison Scuderi. In the sixth inning, Meghan Kovac singled up the middle, and a bunt single by Deanna Gonnella moved her to second. But Hillsborough would get a showstopper …

The Irvington native signed a 3-year, $6 million contract with the Jets in March.
Jets running back Mike Goodson was sent to a Morris County jail following his arrest on drug and weapons charges in Denville Friday. Goodson, 25, was the passenger in a GMC Yukon stopped in the left center lane of I-80 West when a tow truck came upon them and called 911 early Friday morning, according to multiple reports. The tow truck driver reportedly was concerned about the intoxicated condition in which he found Goodson and the driver of the Yukon. Goodson was transported to Saint Claire’s Hospital in nearby Boonton and eventually charged with possession of marijuana, possession of drug paraphernalia, unlawful possession of a handgun, possession of a handgun, and possession of a hollow-point bullet, according to ESPN. The driver of the…
Former NBA player Chris Herren shares drug battle, recovery with community.
About this sponsorship: In honor of the 60th anniversary of Sir Edmund Hillary’s historic ascent of Mount Everest, Patch and Grape-Nuts are teaming up to highlight those who inspire people around them to climb their own mountains. It was just a little drinking and smoking on the weekends in high school. It was just a little cocaine offered by a friend in college. It was just one little yellow pill during the offseason. Then it was a career down the tubes. Then it was two drug overdoses, one of which was heart-stopping. Then it was a family that turned away because of too much pain. For more than an hour, Chris Herren, a once-heralded high school basketball star, college hoops standout and second round National Basketball Association draft …

Ridge tops Hillsborough to claim county title.
The Ridge High School girls lacrosse team launched this season's opening game with a win over Hillsborough, and on Tuesday night faced 'boro again in a high-energy contest for the Somerset County Tournament title, played at Bridgewater-Raritan's stadium. This time, the buzzer ran with the Red Devils ahead by 19-14, giving the girls the county crown. Although the Ridge girls broke past a tie of 2-2 to score goal after goal in the first half — at one point ahead by more than a half-dozen goals — Hillsborough wasn't about to hand the Red Devils the win on a silver platter. The Raiders mounted a comeback, but not enough to turn the game around. Ridge now is 14-2 for the season, while Hillsborough is 12-6.

Raiders shut out Bridgewater-Raritan to earn 11th county championship berth in 12 years.
Hillsborough High School girls will seek their sixth county championship in 12 years after shutting out Bridgewater-Raritan 8-0 Saturday in the Somerset semifinals. Hillsborough got off to a solid start when pitcher Alexis Schengrund struck out the side in the first inning. Schengrund's teammates did their part and put up 4 runs in the same inning, putting Bridgewater on their heels. But Bridgewater looked like they were up to the task when they loaded the bases with one out in the second inning. But the Panthers were unable to capitalize and failed to score. "We hit the ball well today," said Hillsborough coach Cheryl Iaione. "We played them twice before and beat them up pretty good. But we were a little nervous today because they are a …

James, Why belittle another sport (which I dislike, by the way) in order to make your point? And all my point was that the attempt to market MLS as "major league," given the premiere leagues already in places--a number in Europe--was, to me, a waste of time. Can you go to an MLS game and have a great time and see a competitive, fairly topnotch game? Sure, in the same way you can go see the …   more ›
