Hillsborough High Among Nation's Best, Magazine Says

In contrast to earlier ranking, Hillsborough High School in state's top 50 public schools.

Contrasting with the recent U.S. News and World Report "Best High Schools" ratings, Newsweek magazine puts Hillsborough High School among the nation's best. According to a post on the Daily Beast, Newsweek's "America's Best High Schools" rankings score schools on graduation rates, college acceptance and scores on AP and SAT tests. When looked at this way, Hillsborough High School is placed at no. 740 out of 2,000 high schools across the country considered, and 46th among open enrollment public schools in New Jersey. The U.S. News rankings, which did not score test results but participation and the state HSPA tests, did not have Hillsborough placed in the state's top 50 schools this year although it was last year. Newsweek says "The list is…

Unfortunately all this data is based on test scores which have nothing to do with our students hearts and minds. Our high school fails our students in this most important area by keeping them sheltered and treating them unfairly, and without dignity. We need trust our older students and prepare them for the "real world". Many of our students might be prepared academically, but can't handle real …   more ›

High School Revisits Anti-Drunken Driving Program

"Every 15 Minutes" presentation gives students a close look at the fallout of drinking and driving.

Life's lessons are best learned through experience. Unfortunately, when the target audience is teens and the topic is drinking and driving, experience is not the teacher of choice. On April 25 and 26, Hillsborough High School, with the cooperation of the Hillsborough Police, Fire, and EMS departments, held an “Every 15 Minutes” Program to reinforce the lessons for students by recreating a response to a fatal accident. This marked the third time Hillsborough High School held this drinking and driving awareness program. The Every 15 Minutes Program is a model of both school and community-based alcohol prevention that incorporates simulated alcohol-related consequences with community elements that include students, parents, educators, school …

Triangle School Joins Bid for Bubble Record

Students and local officials join Autism Bubble Day project aimed at setting new world record.

Despite gusty winds that hampered their efforts, students at Triangle School made an effort at helping set a new world record for bubble blowing Monday, as part of Autism Bubble Day. The project is aimed at increasing awareness of the challenges facing kids with autism spectrum conditions. Many children on the autism spectrum find themselves isolated or unable to develop friendships—part of the goal of the project is to help overcome those challenges with a fun project. Hillsborough's bubble-blowers included the Triangle School students and teachers, as well as a few local officials, who joined in. "(Township Committeewoman) Gloria McCauley, administrator Anthony Ferrera and myself were there with 600 kids blowing bubbles," Township …

Restructured Bus Routes Save More Than $900,000

School board awards new contracts with substantial savings.

When the Hillsborough Board of Education discussed the possible savings that could come from a change in school starting times for the middle school, after a study by Transporation Supervisor Debra Espinoza, many were skeptical.  The study projected possible savings of more than $950,000 by opening the middle school earlier, thanks to more efficient bus route schedules that would eliminate the need—and costs—for some routes.  Board members happily approved a set of new transportation contracts Monday that reduce the costs of busing by more than $900,000, board member Greg Gillette said.  The contracts also included requirements that the buses be upgraded with GPS and video camera systems, as well as an additional level of liability …

I don't think picking up students that are close to the school is going to save anything but a few commuters' precious seconds. The buses are heading in that direction in the morning anyhow... and pass by the same places to get to their other destinations in the afternoon. I don't see how requiring GPS, video and increased insurance while shaving a few minutes off of any given route would do …   more ›
