New Indoor Paintball Facility is Largest on East Coast

The facility just opened on Chimney Rock Road in Bridgewater.

It is the largest indoor paintball arena both in New Jersey and the whole east coast—and it has come to Bridgewater. Hardcore Paintball Arena opened its doors officially on Chimney Rock Road Friday, with Staten Island residents Harvey Schneider and Angelo DiMaggio at the helm. “We think this is a great town, and we are trying to draw kids and adults of all ages,” Schneider said. “We tell people to try it and see what it’s about.” Schneider said he actually got into this business because of his son, Vincent, who liked playing paintball. “We played at one indoor arena, but mostly outdoor ones,” he said. “I talked with my business partner, and we decided we needed to change that.” And the business stayed in the family because Schneider’s …

What is Hillsborough doing to get business back in Hillsborough? Many have wanted a place for teenagers to go, seems like this business would have been perfect? Is it true the Hillsborough’s government doesn't want new businesses and is disrespectful to those that exist? Has Hillsborough done anything to attract or retain businesses?   more ›

School Board Declares Truce in 'Cupcake Wars'

Board tells parents it's OK to send cupcakes to school for birthdays.

The cupcake wars will not be fought in Hillsborough. The Board of Education is working on a way to make sure that parents know that there is not a policy that prohibits them from sending goodies such as cupcakes or brownies to their children’s class for special occasions, such as birthdays. Board member Lorraine Soisson said at Monday’s board meeting that the state’s nutrition policy, which mandates fat and sugar content of food served in school, is not applicable to food offered either as part of the curriculum or for celebrations, such as birthdays. Soisson said many parents misunderstood the state policy and thought that it forbade snacks like cupcakes. She said the state only prohibits “minimally nutritious” foods such as Italian ices…

This is ridiculous. With all the issues this district has at the academic and administrative level are we really wasting time on "baked goods." This school district looks more foolish with every board meeting!   more ›

8 Money-Saving Tricks for Your Memorial Day BBQ (Sponsored)

Who’s NOT planning a BBQ this weekend? Here are new ideas for keeping your costs down. Sponsored by Home Depot.

Here at Patch, we like to be thrifty, so we talked to two barbecue experts and uncovered some really good ideas to help you save money on your next outdoor party.   Here's their tips on how to save money on your Memorial Day feast. 1. Start with a marinade. This means planning ahead — say, Friday. But it’s worth it, says Rick Browne, host of Barbeque America on PBS, because you can pass up that well-marbled rib eye steak and buy a less tender and less expensive choice to grill like a flank steak or chuck steak. Just marinate it or brine for one or two days and then cook long and slow on the barbecue grill to break down tissues but maintain moisture. “You need to include an acid in the marinade, perhaps juice, vinegar or soy sauce, but …

Yankees Help Bring New Rival for Red Bulls

New York Yankees and Manchester City have teamed up to bring a new professional soccer team to NYC by 2015.

The New York Red Bulls, who call Harrison their home, will not be the only face of professional footy in the metropolitan area for much longer. New York City is planning to kick the ball around in the MLS come the spring of 2015. Major League Soccer Commissioner Dan Garber announced the birth of the newest franchise in the MLS: the New York City Football Club. The new club will be owned by 2012 Barclay’s Premier League champions Manchester City and the 27 time World Series champion New York Yankees. “This opportunity is huge for us and huge for the city. We will work to deliver good, beautiful football to the fans in New York,” said Manchester City CEO Ferran Soriano. “We are very happy and honored to have the Yankees as partners.” Yankees…

James, Why belittle another sport (which I dislike, by the way) in order to make your point? And all my point was that the attempt to market MLS as "major league," given the premiere leagues already in places--a number in Europe--was, to me, a waste of time. Can you go to an MLS game and have a great time and see a competitive, fairly topnotch game? Sure, in the same way you can go see the …   more ›

Paige Aiello Remembered As 'Amazing Person, Loved by All'

Family, friends pay respects to late Hillsborough woman at memorial service in Summit.

It was too nice of a day to wear black. Yet they all — young and old, men and women, relatives, friends, classmates, teammates, co-workers, acquaintances and just strangers who cared — wore black on a late spring day that was perfect for tennis. They literally packed The Unitarian Church in Summit on Tuesday morning to celebrate the life of Paige Aiello. They came not only to pay their respects, but to show respect to the 21-year-old Hillsborough woman who went missing on April 9 and was pronounced dead on May 8. Though the two-hour service was billed as a celebration, boxes of tissues were passed as the tears began to overcome the smiles of remembrance. Paige was last seen by her family on April 9. That evening, her father reported her …

Towns set times for parades, picnics and more — even a commemorative motorcycle run.

Memorial Day is an important occasion in Somerset County, and Patch towns throughout the county will pause and remember those who served — or who are serving now — the nation with a full schedule of parades and other events. "Everyone should honor those who fought for us," said Sari Mazen, owner of the Bagel Bin in Bernardsville, which will serve breakfast after the flag-raising at Olcott Square in the center of Bernardsville at 8 a.m. on Wednesday, part of a weeklong series of activities to recognize Memorial Day in that little borough. Mazen said she also has arranged for Bernards High School to provide the school's Madrigal singers, trumpeters, and a student who will read a poem at Wednesday morning's ceremony. "It's going to be really …
