The Defense Logistics Agency Depot stored one of the Department of Defense's largest stockpiles of mercury — about 12,647 drums with each drum containing 76.6-pound flasks of the chemical. Originally stockpiled for use in thermometers, jet engine instruments, and other devices, modern technologies made the need for the chemical obsolete. After many years of discussion and threats of litigation, removal of the mercury is being done and it is being transported to a depot in Hawthorne, Nev. for permanent storage.
