Saturday Event Highlights Sun Exposure Risks

The annual Rays Art Project will host an artists reception at XACT Studios.

The RAYS Art Project is currently on display at XACT Studios in Hillsborough through Aug. 16.  Artists and photographers from throughout Morris and Somerset Counties were selected to take part in this important project.  Their creative images of the sun offer a great exhibit, while providing information about the dangers of sun exposure without the proper protection.

A Solar Sun Event will be held on Aug. 10, at 10 a.m., 2 and 4 p.m., at XACT Studios, in Hillsborough.  Adventure into space… through site, sound and a great talk with Paul Cirillo, one of NASA / JPL's Solar System Ambassador's.  Learn facts about our sun and its rays.

In addition, the RAYS Art Project will be on display, along with literature and give-a-ways.   Paul is a member of the New Jersey Astronomical Association (www.njaa.org/) which is helping to sponsor the Solar Sun event.

The RAYS Art Project was developed and coordinated by Nancy Edwards of Creative Spaces, a member of the Regional Chronic Disease Coalition of Morris/Somerset Counties.

It was designed as an alternative way to educate the community about skin damage and cancer caused by exposure to the sun.  Lucille Talbot of RCDC provided the educational component of the project.  And Jim Roselli and Jim LaSala of XACT were instrumental in printing many of the images.

As co-sponsors, The Regional Chronic Disease Coalition of Morris/Somerset Counties, Creative Spaces and XACT Studios believed in this project from its inception.  Various members of RCDC offered exhibit space and support to the project.  The RCDC is made possible by a grant from the NJ Department of Health, Office of Cancer Control and Prevention to the Somerset County Department of Health.  To find out more information on comprehensive cancer control in NJ, please visit www.njcancer.gov or contact Lucille Talbot, RCDC Public Health Coordinator at 908-203-6077 or email YTalbot@co.somerset.nj.us.  For more information on the RAYS Art Project, check out www.CreativeSpaces.com or email nancy.edwards@comcast.net.
