Sourland Conservancy Sets Second 'Spectacular' Bike Event

Sept. 7 ride to benefit Conservancy.

The Sourland Conservancy will hold its second annual Sourland Spectacular bicycle event on Sept. 7.  The morning rides will be followed by a gourmet lunch.

The event offers challenging routes for serious cyclists, as well as shorter alternatives for more casual bikers.  Routes of 23, 35, 50 and 63 miles are planned, all of which include some climbing, as Sourland Mountain is beautiful, but not flat.

All routes begin and end at the Otto Kaufman Community Center, 356 Skillman Road, Skillman.  Parking will be across the street at Montgomery High School.

There will be coffee and snacks at registration, and designated rest stops along the routes will offer beverages, snacks and bathroom facilities.  SAG services will be provided by Hart’s Cyclery of Pennington.

“The bike routes are through the large Sourland forest and adjacent picturesque farmland”, says SC President Cliff Wilson.  “They include moderate climbs followed by exhilarating downhill stretches through open vistas.”

Following the morning rides, hikers and bikers will join up for a fabulous lunch at the Otto Kaufman Community Center.  Crispy thin-crust pizza – called the best pizza in New Jersey -- will be prepared on-site in the portable wood-burning oven of Nomad Pizza of Hopewell.  Barbecue sandwiches by “Not Just Q” of Stockton will also be served.  Dessert will be a homemade brownie sundae featuring premium ice cream and the Sourland Spectacular gourmet chocolate sauce.

Participants who register in advance will receive an embroidered cycling cap commemorating the event.

Proceeds will benefit the Sourland Conservancy (formerly Sourland Planning Council), a non-profit organization working to protect the ecological integrity, historical resources and special character of the Sourland Mountain region.

The 90-square-mile Sourland region is home to the largest contiguous forest in Central New Jersey. The sparsely populated area is home to an incredibly rich diversity of animal and plant species, many rare or endangered.

The registration fee is $40 per person, with discounts available for early registration.  The fee for children between the ages 7 to 17 is $20.  Children must be accompanied by a parent or guardian.

The main sponsors of the Sourland Spectacular are 1st Constitution Bank (1stconstitution.com), bai (drinkbai.com), ASIS (asisnj.com), and Harlingen Veterinary Clinic (harlingenveterinaryclinic.com).
