Checks Close Outing's Books—Just in Time to Do It Again

Joe Stutz and Tom Arias' Mayor's Trophy Golf Outing enters sixth year.

When Tom Arias lost his brother in the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, he and his business partner Joe Stutz wanted to create a scholarship fund to honor his memory.

And when the first memorial golf outing was held in 2007, the men found several other worthy causes to support with their successful outing. Last year, more than 70 participants came to support their efforts to help the Adam P. Arias Memorial Fund, two funds helping the families of two veterans killed in action in Iraq—the Cierra Wells Fund and the David Lucci Fund—as well as the Wounded Warriors program, a Hillsborough PBA project in support of the Somerset Hills Learning Institute, and a scholarship program at Hillsborough High School.

It was the last two presentations that brought the family of HHS graduate Ashley Landesman and Hillsborough Police Cpl. Trevor Oldenburg to Stutz' office Monday—Cpl. Oldenburg to receive a $2,500 donation headed to the Somerset Hills school specializing in autistic students his son, Travis, attends.

Landesman received a $1,500 scholarship from the outing as the recipient of the Adam P. Arias Memorial Scholarship awarded to students who are first responders or the children of first responders. She'll be using it as she enters an eight-year medical program offered by Muhlenberg College and Drexel Medical School.

Stutz said the program also pits teams of first responders against each other—so far, teams from Jersey City have been claiming the "Mayor's Trophy," which is inscribed with the winning team's name and placed in the Hillsborough mayor 's office at the municipal complex.

After settling the accounts with additional donations of $2,000 each to the Cierra Wells and the David Lucci funds, Stutz said the balance will be donated to the Wounded Warriors project.

Just in time for the tee off at this year's event, scheduled for Sept. 10 at Neshanic Valley Golf Course. The event includes golf—with two chances to win a new vehicle donated by Fullerton Ford—dinner, a 50/50 drawing and door prizes.

More information, including registration forms, can be found on the Memorial Golf website.
