Work on the Route 22-Chimney Rock Road Interchange project has shifted to the eastbound side, now that the new westbound lanes are open.
On Dec. 13, Route 22 Westbound was shifted from the temporary diversionary road between the Thompson Avenue overpass and I-287 ramps onto a newly constructed Route 22 Westbound.
The new westbound roadway also includes ramps to and from the newly constructed Frontier Road and Chimney Rock Road—the northern portion of the project.
All through lanes and exits remain accessible; additional traffic and directional signs have been posted. This phase of the Route 22 Westbound traffic staging is expected to be in effect for several months while work is being performed for the new Route 22 Eastbound Local/Express roadways and the Chimney Rock Road southerly widening.
The existing Route 22 Eastbound traffic within the project limits will be shifted onto a temporary diversionary road within the next two months. Advance notification will be provided.
The work is part of a nearly $8 million safety improvement and congestion relief project launched almost a year ago for a three-mile stretch of Route 22 in Bridgewater and Somerville.
