Seven Residents Apply to Fill Open Board Seat

Yesterday marked the application deadline for those interested in Barbara Sargent's board seat.

Seven Hillsborough residents applied for the one-year Board of Education seat that will be left open by Barbara Sargent’s resignation.

As of Tuesday’s 4 p.m. filing deadline, residents Constance Harbison, of Burris Road, David A. DeFreese, of Van Fleet Court, Vernon Spencer, Senior, of Bloomingdale Drive, Steven Sloan, of Wolfe Drive, William Kole, of Robin Road, Peter Bambic, of Wesley Road and Dana Boguszewski, of Beverly Drive, applied to fill the remain year in Sargent’s term.

Sargent resigned from her seat at the board’s May 17 meeting, after being named superintendent for the Readington School district. Her resignation is effective June 30, since she will begin her duties in Readington July 1.

She is two years into her three-year term, so the person appointed to her spot will serve the remaining year on the board. Should the person who is appointed decide to continue serving on the board, that person would need to run for a board member’s three-year post during the 2012 school elections.

The board’s candidate interviews will occur at the board’s June 13 meeting, and will take place during a public session.  Then, the board will adjourn to an executive session to discuss the interviews and to select a candidate to fill the open spot.

After reconvening in public, the board would then appoint the candidate to the board post.

To apply for the seat, candidates needed to submit a cover letter and resume to Aiman Mahmoud, the township’s business administrator.

Of those filing, only Sloan served on the board previously, having served from 2000 until 2007, the year he lost his reelection bid.

The Board of Education will meet at 6:30 June 13 in Auten Road Intermediate School to interview the candidates.
