School District Receives High Marks From State

It's been a prolific month for Hillsborough education honors.

The honors keep piling up for the Hillsborough school district.

In a month when , the school district has gained high marks in the state’s certification process.

That certification, good for three years, evaluated the school district in five areas–instruction and program, fiscal management, governance, operations and personnel. The district has been designated by the state as “high performing.”

The district received 100 percent marks in fiscal management, governance, operations and personnel and a 91 percent mark in instruction and program.

Lisa Antunes, the assistant superintendent of schools, said at Monday’s school board meeting that the performance review is “a pretty long and drawn-out process.”

The goal of the review, Antunes said, is for the state to check that “we are doing what we say we are doing.”

The state evaluations used to be done every seven years; now they are done every three years, she said.

, which also put it in the top 10 percent of the 22,000 high schools in the country.

Newsweek announced Monday that Hillsborough High School has made its list of "America's Best High Schools 2012." The publication ranked Hillsborough No. 721 in the country. The top-rated school in the state was Freehold's Biotechnology High School, coming in at No. 20. The school with the highest rank in Somerset County was Ridge High School, rated No. 140 in the nation.

On the athletic field, the Hillsborough High School girls varsity softball team is ranked 11th in New Jersey by the Star-Ledger, the girls varsity lacrosse team is ranked 16th, and the boys varsity baseball team won the Somerset County Tournament.

Earlier this year, the girls cross country team won the state Group IV championship.
