Congressman Proves Tough to Stump at ARIS Visit

U.S. Rep. Leonard Lance takes sixth-graders' queries on history, politics and personal favorites.

If you find yourself in a game of Trivial Pursuit, or perhaps needing to call someone to stay in the running on "Who Wants to Be a Millionaire?," keep contact information for U.S. Rep. Leonard Lance on hand.

Rep. Lance, R-7th, took time from the Congressional Thanksgiving break to visit a group of sixth-graders at Auten Road Intermediate School Monday, taking their questions on everything from the name of George Washington's favorite horse to his views on President Barack Obama.

"I think he's a fine man personally, but I disagree with him on some things," Lance told the students.

Lance proved game as the students challenged him on his knowledge of history—he named all 44 U.S. presidents, the members of Washington's cabinet (only missing the name of Washington's Attorney Generals—the first was Edmund Randolph; the second was William Bradford), and what Thomas Jefferson did before becoming president.

"I don't remember personally, it's a little before my time," Lance joked.

It was only the question on Washington's horse that stumped the third-term Congressman (its name was Nelson).

The students also asked about politics and October's government shutdown, as well as aspects of his job in Washington.

"I hope you have learned a thing or two from me—I certainly learned from you," he said after the hour-long discussion.
