Update: Write-in Votes Pose Only Question in District 16

All candidates on ballots ran unopposed, but there was an open spot for the GOP Assembly race.

The only question remaining after the District 16 primary elections is will there be a second Republican candidate for Assembly, and if so, who is it?

Two Hillsborough Township residents will have their names on ballots come November's general election, and one may have a running mate that wasn't on the ones voters saw on Tuesday.

Incumbent Hillsborough resident Peter Biondi (R) will face Marie Corfield (D-Flemington) and Joe Camarota (D-Kendall Park) for two seats in the Assembly. Assemblywoman Denise M. Coyle (R-Bernards), who was shifted from District 16 into District 21 after redistricting, had originally said she would move in order to run as an incumbent in District 16. She later decided not to run.

However, according to PolitickerNJ, Biondi said a group had robocalled the district asking voters to write-in Coyle. That may have hindered Somerset County Freeholder Jack Ciattarelli's write-in candidacy, which Biondi is supporting. It is uncertain at this time which, if either, candidate will be running with Biondi in November.

The unofficial results posted on the Somerset County Clerk's website at mid-morning on Wednesday showed Biondi had received 2,322 votes, while write-in candidates received 1,063 from county voters. Corfield had received 971 and Camarota 951.

Meanwhile, Hillsborough's Maureen Vella (D) will challenge incumbent Christopher Bateman (R-Somerville) for a Senate seat.

Vella unofficially received 993 votes and Bateman 2,370 from county voters.
