Special Police Force May Come to an End

Corps of residents trained to assist police would be disbanded if ordinance approved.

A corps of trained residents who help bolster police during emergencies, as well as provide assistance with traffic duties, may be eliminated under an ordinance introduced at Tuesday's Township Commitee meeting.

The move comes after township officials reviewed the costs and benefits of keeping the special police.

"Due to the training requirements...and the number of times they are used, it isn't really cost efficient to have a special police program," Mayor Frank DelCore said.

If approved after a public hearing Feb. 12, the special police would be disbanded.

Mayor DelCore noted the township recognized a number of special police officers for their service in the fall.
