UPDATE: 206 Opened With One Lane in Both Directions

Ongoing gas pipeline repair was expected to keep lane closed.

Update: Hilsborough police announced Route 206 has been opened between New Amwell and Amwell roads, with one lane traveling in both directions, Friday.

In an message issued at 2:44 p.m., police said "Effective immediately Rt 206 has been re-opened in both directions, with one lane each way. All businesses are open and accessible. There is still emergency repair work being done in the area with intermittent road closures expected. Please plan accordingly. Your patience is appreciated."

Original story: Work to repair a leak in the gas pipeline beneath Route 206 is expected to keep the southbound lane of Route 206 between New Amwell and Amwell roads closed for as much as two weeks, police said today.

The lane was closed Tuesday after work pinpointed the leak that first seemed to appear over last weekend.

The pipeline is operated by Buckeye Pipe Line, of Breinigsville, Pa., and transports refined petroleum, including gasoline, from a distribution facility in Linden to Macungie, Pa. Normally, the pipeline transports about 140,000 barrels of product, but is closed for work on the 20-inch pipeline.

According to Buckeye spokesman David Boone, the leak is beneath Route 206, where the pipe in sheathed within a larger, concrete pipe. He told township officials at Tuesday's Township Committee meeting the leak was small enough to be undetectable on the pipeline's monitoring systems. He said about 25 gallons leaked Monday before the location of the leak was determined.

Work underway between the corner and the entrance to the Sunnyland Plaza shopping center includes the pipeline repair, cleanup of leaked gasoline, and the installation of monitoring equipment, which will track any fumes or seepage into the ground in the area.

Detours for the southbound traffic route vehicles down New Amwell Road to Auten Road, then back to Route 206 on Amwell Road.

Phenomenal, because all I really wanted for Christmas this year was more traffic.
