Road Project Leaves Rough Surface

But the curves on New Centre Road are expected to cause fewer crashes with new "high friction surface."

A $303,092 project to resurface New Centre Road, between Auten and Roycefield roads, left some motorists scratching their heads.

The project, now complete, included the application of several inches of fresh pavement—which was subsequently milled, leaving a rough surface that engineers say should help reduce the 60 accidents on the road that occur every year.

Somerset County Engineer Matt Loper said the federally-funded project is one of a number of similar projects undertaken to install "high friction pavement surfaces" in the county in places where significant numbers of accidents occur.

"Obviously, to any motorist who drives on it, it provides more traction," Loper said. He said the rough surface reduces side-to-side sliding, which has been an issue for many drivers on the road.
