No-Pass Resolution Allows Line Repainting on 206

A resolution before the Township Committee allows for Department of Transportation maintenance.

A no-passing resolution approved at Tuesday's Township Committee meeting simply allows the Department of Transportation to replace dotted yellow lines on Route 206 with double-yellow lines.

The entire stretch of Route 206 is considered a no-pass zone, meaning drivers cannot merge into the opposite lane of travel in order to pass someone, Police Chief Paul Kaminsky said.

"It's exactly what it always is," Kaminsky said.

Drivers can still pass each other on parts of 206 where there are two lanes of traffic in the same direction, he added.

The resolution follows a notice from the Department of Transportation, which manages 206, expressing the intent to repaint the lines. The department requires a local resolution in order to begin the work, though it changes nothing about how the road operates.

The section to be painted is primarily the southern section of the road, since concrete medians on the northern portion make  passing into the opposite traffic lane impossible.

"It doesn't pertain to the northern part because there are barriers," Chief Kaminsky said. "From Brown Avenue south, it needs painting."

The township did not state a start date for the work.
