A Hillsborough High School senior was honored by the township for saving the life of a 7-year-old boy this summer.
Jake Burgess was working as a lifeguard at the Governor’s Point townhouse complex on July 9 when he saw the boy drowning in the pool, according to the proclamation issued by the Township Committee.
Without hesitation, the teenager pulled the boy out of the pool and immediately began CPR.
"It was extremely stressful," Burgess told Patch earlier this year. "But my training prepared me for it. I knew what to do ... I saw the young boy at the bottom of the pool and I pulled him up; he wasn't breathing. I performed CPR."
By the time emergency personnel arrived, the boy was alert and conscious, the proclamation reads.
The boy has not experienced any long-lasting effects from the incident.
On Aug. 6, Jake was honored by North Brunswick Township with a proclamation, the Life Saving Award and the Hometown Citizen Award.
Jake, who has been a lifeguard for three years, is currently a lifeguard at the Hillsborough YMCA.
